( MORE: 3 things we learned )

A 1-1 draw was a fair resultBruno Fernandes' penalty gave United a brief lead before Moises Caicedo scored a fine equaliser.

While United's players are being tested under new manager Ruben Amorim and Chelsea's youth players are still trying to find out what they are capable of, we saw mixed performances.

Below are Manchester United vs Chelsea player ratings with grades out of 10 and analysis.

Manchester United player ratings

André Onana:6 – Distribution put his teammates under pressure at times and was a bit shifty on some crosses.

Diogo Dalot:6 – I had a hard time keeping Neto a secret, but I persevered.

Matthijs de Ligt: 7 – Defensively strong enough. Kept Jackson calm and got some good balls forward.

Lisandro Martinez:7 – Lots of great defensive work. Reads the game so well and cleaned things up nicely. I was lucky that I wasn't sent off late for a tackle on Palmer.

Noussair Mazraoui:7 – Managed the tackles well and pushed high up the left side to get United going.

Casemiro:7 – Brilliant pass to find Hojlund for United's penalty. Did his best to hold things together and always demanded more from his teammates.

Manuel Ugarte: 5 – Booked in the first half, had another tough outing as his slow start continues. Surely his former coach at Sporting will get the best out of him?

Marcus Rashford: 6 – Look frustrated for most of the game. In the first half he hit a shot that hit the crossbar.

Bruno Fernandes: 7 – Scored the penalty, kept popping up in dangerous areas and creating quality moments with passes and flicks.

Alejandro Garnacho: 6 – Wasted a good chance late on. His teammates wanted more from him defensively.

Rasmus Hojlund:7 – He ran to the ground and took the penalty. Chelsea's defense was completely overwhelmed.

Substitutions
Amad Diallo (In for Rashford 73'): 6 – Struggling to influence the game.
Joshua Zirkzee (Play-in for Hojlund 84th minute): 6 – A breakaway chance, but it wasn't up to par. In some nice positions.
Victor Lindelof (Admission for Ugarte 84th minute): 6 – There were problems in midfield in an unfamiliar role.

Chelsea player ratings

Robert Sanchez:5 – Big mistake bringing Hojlund down for a penalty. Has a moment like that every other game.

Malo Gusto: 6 – Played well at right-back in the first half and burst forward several times. It was a surprise that he left during the break.

Wesley Fofana: 5 – Looked a little shaky and was taken out of position by the ball for United's penalty.

Levi Colwill:6 – Solid enough and was a threat at the other end from set pieces.

Reece James: 5 – I was still shaking off the rust and posed no attacking threat at all, either as a left-back in the first half or as a right-back in the second.

Moises Caicedo: 8 – Excellent volley for Chelsea's goal and performed confidently in midfield, closing defensive gaps and holding the ball well. What a great season he is having.

Romeo Lavia:6 – He didn't get on the ball as often as he would normally like to, but was still solid and stable and gave Chelsea a good defensive base.

Noni Madueke:5 – Hits the post with a header from close range and should have scored. It just wasn't his day as he never really felt comfortable on the ball.

Cole Palmer: 7 – As always, a great selection of tricks and tricks. United tried to chop him down. Pure class when he was on the ball and the childhood Man United fan was very good at Old Trafford.

Pedro Neto:6 – Had some good moments and almost scored in the second half when his low shot went just wide.

Nicholas Jackson:6 – Some decent heist play, but was a single character for most of the game. He did his best to be a nuisance and worked very hard.

Substitutions
Marc Cucurella (turned on for Gusto 45'): 6 – He was busy as usual and kept Rashford calm.
Mykhailo Mudryk (switched on for Madueke 72'): 5 – Barely had a touchdown and looked a little lost.
Enzo Fernandez (Credit for Lavia 72'): 5 – A good chance shot well over the bar.
