Manchester City vs Southampton: Premier League – BBC Sport

  • Having lost three consecutive Premier League home games against Southampton between 2001 and 2004, Man City are unbeaten in their last twelve games against them at the Etihad Stadium (W10 D2).

  • Southampton have won just one of their last 14 Premier League games against Manchester City (D3 L10), winning 1-0 at home in July 2020.

  • Manchester City are unbeaten in 31 Premier League games (W25 D6) since losing to Aston Villa last December. They have fallen behind twelve times in this run and have won ten of those games (D2).

  • Southampton have lost seven of their eight Premier League games this season, the other being a draw against Ipswich in September. After 1998/99 (the first nine), it is only the second time that the Saints have failed to win their first eight games of a league season.

  • Manchester City have gained 13 points from losing places in the Premier League this season, more than any other team. In fact, it is the most points a team has ever earned from losing positions in the first eight games of a Premier League season.

  • Manchester City had 85 touches of the ball in Wolves' penalty area in their 2-1 win last Sunday, the most by any team in a Premier League game this season and the most by any team in an away game since 2008/09. In fact, City's total of 404 penalty area touches is the most any team has ever recorded on Opta in the first eight games of a season.

  • No team has scored more goals from corners in the Premier League this season than Manchester City (3), while Southampton have jointly scored the most corners (5). In City's last game they won from a corner in the 90th minute, while in Southampton's last game they lost from a goal from a corner in the 90th minute.

  • Russell Martin has taken just one point in his first eight Premier League games as Southampton manager (D1 L7) – in Premier League history only Mick McCarthy has ever taken fewer points in his first eight games (nil).

  • Erling Haaland has played three Premier League games without a goal for Man City for the second time, having played four without a goal between December and February last season. In the last game against Wolves he only had 13 touches of the ball, his fewest in a game in Europe's top five leagues when he played 90 minutes.

  • Among players who play more than 500 minutes against promoted teams, only Gianluca Vialli (one every 56 minutes) has a better minutes per goal ratio than Man City's Erling Haaland (one every 60 minutes, 13 goals in 780 minutes). He is aiming to become the first player since Sergio Aguero in November 2017 to score in seven consecutive starts against promoted teams.
