Man with AK rifle in officer-involved shooting is dead; Monterey Sheriff's Office – KION546

CARMEL, Calif. (KION-TV) – A man with an AK rifle was walking along 8th and Monte Verde streets in Carmel on Friday, multiple witnesses told KION.

The Monterey Sheriff's Office confirmed the suspect is now dead. It is said he died in hospital after officers opened fire. This came after de-escalation efforts failed, according to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said the suspect's mother and a neighbor were the people who notified police and that his mother said he told her he wanted to die in an officer-involved shooting.

According to Stephen Moorer, general manager of the Golden Bough Playhouse, the man was walking around in a barricaded area and police were notified, arrived at the scene and then shot the suspect with bean bags. Moorer said he saw the man being carried on a stretcher.

The district attorney's office confirms to KION that it has taken over the investigation into the “officer involved in the shooting.”

This is a developing story. Further details will be published as soon as KION has further information. A reporter makes his way to the crime scene.
