Magnitude 4.8 earthquake strikes Hawaii Island, part of ongoing swarm beneath Pāhala: Maui Now

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake reported overnight on the Big Island of Hawaii was part of an ongoing swarm of deep seismicity occurring beneath the Pāhala area since 2019, according to scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

The quake hit at 1:42 a.m. on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, about 3 miles southwest of Pāhala, at a depth of 24 miles below sea level, according to HVO.

The HVO reports that the earthquake had no noticeable impact on the Maunaloa or Kīlauea volcanoes. Scientists continue to monitor the area for any changes and report that aftershocks are possible in the coming days to weeks.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a statement after the quake saying a tsunami was not expected but shaking may have occurred in some areas.

According to the USGS, there were 190 felt reports within the first half hour. Have you felt it? website, with scattered reports from as far away as Oahu.
