Luke Combs says Tracy Chapman corrected his lyric error on “Fast Car.”

Every time Luke Combs plays “Fast Car” now, he remembers something Tracy Chapman told him about her signature song, which he made popular again with his 2023 country-style cover.

Combs spoke about his remake onstage at a recent concert and recalled how Chapman pointed out a mistake he made in the lyrics.

In a moment captured on TikTok by a viewer, the crooner recounted how he sang the line “still gotta make a choice” in his recording of “Fast Car,” but Chapman corrected him and said the actual lyrics were ” “We gotta make a choice.” .”

“That was the first time I knew I had recorded the song wrong,” Combs told fans at the show. “She told me that. Because I remember when she said that, I wanted to crawl into a hole.”

Luckily, Chapman didn't seem too upset by the glitch. “Luckily she was great about it,” Combs said. “And I think about it every time I sing that song, and I will think about it every time I sing that song, for the rest of my life.”

He added that his live performances of Chapman's song in the future will be different from his recording of it.

“So the version you know is, 'I still have to make a decision.' Not the words,” he said. “It’s just not the words. I made this up in my head. That's why I'm going to sing 'We Have to Make a Decision' tonight.” Because Tracy Chapman told me to, and damn it, I'm going to do it.

Combs and Chapman sang “Fast Car” as a duet at the 2024 Grammy Awards in February. They met in person for the first time during rehearsals for the performance and ended up practicing together for six hours before the big night.

“She had a vision and asked Luke his thoughts,” Combs manager Chris Kappy said Rolling Stone at the time. “Then they just kept going through it and going through it.”

Chapman won critical acclaim for “Fast Car,” which tells the story of a working-class couple trying to make ends meet and how their car represents their hope for a better life, when she released it in 1988. Combs' version was inspired by his memories of listening to the song in the car with his father during his childhood, and it has become an anthem for a new generation. It landed at number 1 billboard Country charts and No. 2 on the billboard Hot 100, and when it won Song of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards in November 2023, Chapman became the first Black woman to win a CMA Award.

Combs and Chapman's Grammy performance pushed Chapman's original “Fast Car” to No. 1 in the iTunes Store after the ceremony.
