Luke Combs says he wanted to “crawl into a hole” after Tracy Chapman discovered the “Fast Car” blunder

Luke Combs has revealed the lyrical mistake Tracy Chapman pointed out to him in his hit remix of her song “Fast Car.”

The 34-year-old country singer made his audience aware of the mistake at a recent concert.

He explained that when he first recorded his cover, one of the last lines he sang was “Still I have to make a decision.” However, when he spoke with Chapman, he learned that the correct statement was actually, “We have to make a decision.”

“That was the first time I knew I had recorded the song wrong. That's what she told me,” Combs said, as seen in videos captured by concertgoers. “Because I remember when she said that, I wanted to crawl into a hole.”

However, Combs made it clear that Chapman didn't make him feel bad about the mistake.

“Luckily she was great about it. And I think about it every time I sing that song, and I'll think about it every time I sing that song, for the rest of my life,” he continued. “But she was so cool about it.”

He stated that he would correct himself during his live performance of the song.

“So the version you know is, 'I still have to make a decision.' Not the words. It's just not the words. I made that up in my head,” Combs added. “So tonight I'll probably sing, 'We have to make a decision.' Because Tracy Chapman told me to, and damn it, I’m going to do it.”

While Chapman's song was originally released in 1988, Combs' cover of “Fast Car” won Song of the Year at the 2023 Country Music Awards. Chapman received her flowers at the event in Nashville along with host Sara Evans and country musician Bill Anderson read a statement on her behalf.

“I'm sorry I couldn't be with you tonight. It is truly an honor for my song to be recognized again after 35 years of its debut,” she wrote in the statement. “Thank you to the CMAs and a special thank you to Luke and all the fans of Fast Car.”

With this win, Chapman became the first Black artist to take home the Song of the Year award. Additionally, “Fast Car” also earned Combs an award as its cover was named Single of the Year.

Combs initially covered the song as the second single from his album Gets oldwhich came out in 2023. The cover revitalized Chapman's song and was also a huge hit on radio, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 last year.

During the Grammy Awards in February, Combs also performed “Fast Car” with Chapman on stage with him.
