Live updates: Israel attacks Lebanon and Gaza, war with Hamas and Hezbollah

At least seven hospitals are located in exclusion zones imposed by the Israeli military in the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital, including Al Rassoul Al Azam Hospital and St. Therese Hospital, a CNN analysis of Israeli military evacuation orders found.

The unsafe zones in Beirut's southern suburbs, a group of neighborhoods where Hezbollah's seat of power is located, cover nearly nine square kilometers.

CNN analyzed a total of 39 evacuation orders issued almost daily since September 27 by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) Arabic spokesman Avichay Adraee in posts on X up to and including the night of October 6th.

Typically, the posts warn residents to “immediately” evacuate certain targeted buildings and to flee to areas beyond a 500-meter radius of the target. Satellite images embedded in the posts show the target buildings highlighted in red.

In the last ten days, such warnings preceded air strikes by just a few minutes. In other cases, notably two attacks that occurred within Beirut city limits for the first time since the 2006 war, no such warnings were issued. CNN asked the Israeli military for comment at the time and did not receive a response.

CNN reviewed the locations of 39 buildings identified by the Israeli military as being near Hezbollah targets as of the night of October 6, and measured a 500-meter radius around each building to calculate the total area Civilians were ordered to evacuate. It covers 8.9 square kilometers (3.4 sq mi) of the city's southern suburbs, known as Dahiyeh.

The East of Dahiyeh has been the epicenter of announced airstrikes, some of which struck close to Lebanon's only public airport.

The Israeli military has not yet given residents any indication of when they can return to the affected areas.

CNN also found that infographics that the Israeli military distributed early along with its evacuation orders were in some cases inaccurate. The graphics appear to illustrate the 500-meter zone around targeted buildings from which residents must be evacuated for their safety – showing a red circle around the highlighted building and a dotted line with “500 meters” written in Arabic. In fact, the radii of the highlighted buffer zones in these cases were only about 100 meters. This was the case in six different evacuation orders before the IDF stopped including illustrations of the exclusion zones in its graphics. CNN has reached out to the IDF for comment.
