Michigan State football looks to play spoilsport on Saturday when the Spartans take on the surging Indiana Hoosiers.

In Curt Cignetti's first year in Bloomington, Indiana is 8-0 (5-0 Big Ten) and has its sights set on the Big Ten Championship and the College Football Playoff. Meanwhile, Michigan State is still on the right track under Jonathan Smith, but it's trending in the right direction. At 4-4 (2-3 Big Ten), Michigan State is still two wins away from bowl eligibility. The games heading to Indiana will be against Illinois, Purdue and Rutgers.

The Spartans suffered a loss to Michigan last week, but there were good things to take from the 24-17 loss. Aidan Chiles completed 17 of 23 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown, while Nathan Carter ran for over 100 yards. The Spartans outscored Michigan but ultimately fell just short.

For the Hoosiers, Kurtis Rourke will be back at quarterback after missing last week's game against Washington.

Although the offense was the focus of this game, the defense showed up on both sides.

Indiana passes Nate Carter on third-and-2 and forces a Spartan punt, the fourth of the first half and the first for Michigan State. Indiana took over from its own 35-yard line after a 16-yard return by Myles Price.

Michigan State's defense picks up the offense by forcing its second three-pointer of the game against a strong Indiana offense. The highlight was a beautiful pass breakup on second down when Rourke looked down.

Michigan State gets the ball back at its own 5-yard line after a nice punt from James Evans.

Shortly after Indiana entered the field, the Hoosiers intercepted Aidan Chiles with a pass that fell into the arms of Amare Ferrell.

Ferrell returns the pick to the Indiana 45-yard line, and after a lackluster start, Indiana appears to be getting rolling as the offense takes the field again.

After a slow start, Indiana's offense got going and opened the second quarter with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Kurtis Rourke to Zach Horton. Horton was left alone in the middle of the field, and the Hoosiers were able to capitalize and get within three points of Michigan State.

It's hard to imagine a better start to this game for the Spartans. After forcing another Indiana punt, Michigan State marched 71 yards downfield in 13 plays. Aidan Chiles caps the drive with an absolutely sensational throw to Nick Marsh, who makes an equally impressive catch for an 18-yard TD.

Indiana questions the call, but review confirms the catch, and Michigan State has an early 10-0 lead over the Hoosiers.

A 47-yard field goal by Jonathan Kim capped an eight-play drive for Michigan State that saw Detroit native Nick Marsh make an incredible third-down catch down the sideline. Indiana loses 3-0, which is the first time the Hoosiers have fallen behind this season. Michigan State will start with just under 10 minutes left in the first quarter.

Michigan State didn't shy away from the potent Indiana offense on its first possession, as it stood firm after a 9-yard gain on first down and forced a punt against Kurtis Rourke and the Hoosiers. Aidan Chiles and the Spartans will now take over from their own 19-yard line.

Indiana will start with the ball from their own 25-yard line and we're headed to East Lansing.

Michigan State will wear its blackout jerseys for Saturday's game against Indiana as it looks to spoil Curt Cignetti and his Hoosiers.

Indiana is also in the ballpark as it looks to continue its dominant year so far. Kurtis Rourke is back at center for the Hoosiers.

Michigan State completed its traditional Spartan Walk at home, with players entering Spartan Stadium to prepare for their game against the undefeated Hoosiers.

Michigan State vs Indiana Predictions

Graham Couch, Lansing State Journal:

Indiana and MSU have taken different paths in their first eight games under new coaches. Hoosiers coach Curt Cignetti was, without question, an excellent hire. But MSU also would have been at least 6-0 if it had played the Hoosiers' schedule. The last two weeks – impressive wins by Indiana over Nebraska and Washington – are evidence of something more. This is an Indiana team full of confidence and plenty of talent. The Spartans, meanwhile, moved to 4-4 with road games at Boston College, Oregon and Michigan by playing Ohio State and Oregon six days apart. MSU knows all of its flaws and weaknesses and had to earn everything. In the long run, this might prove to be a better way to build something. But it didn't lead to a better season. Indiana is no fluke and the Hoosiers are getting going.

Do it: Indiana 34, MSU 27
