In the national spotlight is the fact that Marylanders could actually decide which political party will control the U.S. Senate for the next four years.

The race between former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, who is running for the Republicans, and current Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, who is running for the Democrats, has many eyes across the country on the state.

This unusually competitive race has already brought in at least $84.6 million in total donations, according to a Washington Post report last week.

Abortion is the two candidates' top issue, but both have also clashed on other issues – and have been criticized on ethical issues.

Former Gov. Larry Hogan has faced criticism over potential conflicts of interest related to his real estate company. Alsobrooks was accused of benefiting from tax credits to which she was not entitled. Both protest their innocence.

Alsobrooks has focused part of her campaign on the idea of the 51st vote — and Democratic control of the Senate.

“This race is about defeating Donald Trump. This is about ensuring we protect our reproductive freedoms. It's about making sure we have sensible gun laws that protect our children from gun violence. It's about protecting voting.” “It's about building an economy that works for all of our children,” Alsobrooks said. “This race is also about preserving the 51st vote. That’s why the Senate race is so important, to make sure we confirm Supreme Court justices who respect our freedoms, as opposed to these conservative justices.”
