Lions coach Dan Campbell announces timeline for Aidan Hutchinson's injury

The news about Aidan Hutchinson's injury keeps coming, and on Monday afternoon Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell gave the most definitive update yet. Campbell said Hutchinson's injury, a broken tibia and fibula, will take four to six months to recover. However, he doesn't expect Hutchinson to return late this season.

“It takes four to six months,” Campbell said. “I would never leave Hutch out. Always. So, yeah, probably a long way. But I would never disregard him. I would say if anyone could make it back it would be him.”

That's obviously an optimistic thought, considering Hutchinson would return in mid-February after a four-month recovery (the Super Bowl is on February 9). However, it matches the optimism of a Hutchinson family member who told Michael Stone on Sunday night that he thought he would be ready if the Lions reached the Super Bowl.

Leaving the door open for a return, Campbell believes, could be the incentive Hutchinson needs to return as soon as possible.

“Knowing Hutch, he has one of those rare things – if he believes in it, he can force himself to find a way back,” Campbell said. “It's one of those where the mind can heal the body, and it will find the next best thing and do whatever it takes to get it back. So who knows?”

However, all of this remains to be seen. In the meantime, the Lions will explore all options to replace Hutchinson both internally and externally. However, the one thing they won't do is panic or make a hasty decision.

“Where we are now, we’re not in a hurry,” Campbell said. “I believe in the guys who are here. I believe in this D-line. That doesn't mean that we don't look (outwardly) and don't evaluate. Brad (Holmes) is, this is his job and he's good at it. We take it as it comes. But our eyes are open and we want to make sure we have what we need here.”
