Liam Payne's autopsy report reveals his cause of death

An autopsy report has confirmed Liam Payne's cause of death, a day after the singer died aged 31.

On October 16, the former One Direction band member died after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina.

According to a press release from the Argentine Prosecutor's Office, the autopsy report details how the singer died and provides information about the injuries he sustained before his death.

How did Liam Payne die?

The Sistema de Atencio Medica de Emergencia shared the following statement with Telemundo, part of NBCUniversal, following Payne's death.

“British musician Liam James Payne, composer and guitarist, former member of the band One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Palermo,” the statement said. “In the afternoon, police officers from Precinct 14B were directed to the hotel by an emergency call and reported an aggressive man who may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”

Payne was not named in the call, which came minutes before Payne's death, according to prosecutors.

In a statement to the Associated Press, Buenos Aires' security ministry said Payne “jumped from the balcony of his room.” Paramedics determined the singer had “extremely serious injuries” and pronounced him dead at the scene.

What did Liam Payne's autopsy report reveal?

Argentine prosecutors shared details from Payne's autopsy in a news release obtained by TODAY.com.

According to the autopsy, Payne died of “polytrauma and internal and external bleeding.”

Prosecutors described the death as “doubtful/undetermined,” meaning there was no conclusive information about the cause of death.

After Payne's death, “a number of substances were seized from the musician's room that would provide evidence of prior alcohol and drug use,” the press release said.

Payne was open about his history of addiction before his death.

Payne's injuries are described

Payne died as a result of “multiple traumatic injuries” and “internal and external bleeding” that he sustained after falling from a balcony, according to the prosecutor’s statement.

Forensics found a total of 25 injuries “consistent with those of a fall from height.” In particular, the singer's brain and skull injuries were “sufficiently likely to cause death”.

The internal and external bleeding in his skull, chest, abdomen and limbs “contributed to the mechanism of death,” the release said.

He was probably alone when he fell

According to the prosecutor's office, “everything indicates that the musician was alone when the fall occurred and that he was suffering some kind of breakdown due to drug abuse.”

After forensic experts analyzed the singer's hands, they found no defensive injuries, leading them to believe that “all injuries to the body were vital and occurred simultaneously and that no injuries were observed that could indicate intervention by.” Third.”

Additionally, the position of Payne's body suggested that he “did not adopt a reflexive stance to protect himself and that he may have fallen into a state of semi- or total unconsciousness.”

An investigation is ongoing

According to prosecutors, additional testing was requested to determine whether there was alcohol or drugs in Payne's system at the time of his death.

After Payne's death, officers interviewed five witnesses. The group included three hotel workers and two women who had been with Payne in his room in the hours before his death but were not present at the time of his death.

According to the prosecutor's office, the ongoing investigation aims to “determine the possible involvement of third parties in the events preceding the death of the victim.”

What is polytrauma?

The National Library of Medicine describes polytrauma as a condition characterized by “multiple injuries, some of which can result in significant disability and be life-threatening.”

The prosecution defined polytrauma as “multiple traumatic injuries.”

Polytrauma usually refers to injuries that affect multiple organs or systems. Common causes of polytrauma are car accidents and suicide or homicide attempts.

Death from polytrauma can occur as soon as the injuries are sustained, or shortly thereafter, or it may take longer, research shows. When it occurs immediately, it is usually due to a primary brain injury or significant blood loss. If it comes later, it is often due to a secondary brain injury or the body's inability to recover from the injuries.

What was in the 911 call before Liam Payne's death?

On the afternoon of Payne's death, authorities responded to a 911 call from an employee at Payne's hotel about a guest who had destroyed items in his room while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, Telemundo said in the audio recording of the call.

According to prosecutors, the call came a few minutes before Payne's death. The call does not mention Payne by name. The guest in question had been at the hotel for two to three days.

The guest “consumed too many drugs and alcohol,” the report states. “Well, when he's conscious, he…destroys the whole room. Well we need you to send someone please.”

During the conversation, the hotel employee expressed concern for the guest's well-being.

“And we desperately need someone sent to us because, well, I don’t know if they’re at risk. The guest is in a room with a balcony, and, well, we're a little worried that he might do something life-threatening,” the caller said.

Where did Liam Payne die?

A press release from the Argentine prosecutor's office said Payne died at the Hotel Casa Sur in Buenos Aires, Argentina, near Palermo. He was staying in a bedroom on the third floor of the hotel and fell from the balcony outside his room.
