As for the night of Nov. 5 when election results come in, Holt described his job as a “transition” from campaign reporting for nearly two years. “Tomorrow we will be spectators for at least a while and wait for the information to come in – then we can report on it,” he said.

Holt confirmed that he was a NBC Nightly News Anchor for 10 years and he's exhausted 25 He has worked at NBC News for many years, so he knows his way around a sensitive election night. But with so many Americans eager to see who will be elected the 47th President of the United States, Fallon told Holt that if he were in the role of host, he would be “living in a cave” right now.

“Really?” Holt asked.

“Yes! Because everyone has their phones on hand and they're probably trying to trick you into saying, 'Who's going to win?' or: 'Do you know something?'”

While “trick” isn’t the word Holt would use, “people think you know a lot in this job, especially in times like this.”

“You want to know what I know about the election: Who will win? When are we going to call the election?” Holt told Fallon. “And sometimes you can't be as open as you want to be a lot of times because the radar is a little high. But for most people, it's a real conversation that we're all involved in on some level now.”

Fallon said he appreciated that Holt “kept the style” during the 2024 election, which Fallon called “probably one of the craziest in American history.”

“It was different,” Holt admitted. Of the polls, which according to NBC News are at 49-49, he said: “The polls are very useful in understanding where the story is going – what issues are moving people or driving them to the (voting booth) what they think about a particular topic.

However, “As far as picking a winner or loser, I don’t rely on that,” Holt added.

“There are some states I would keep an eye on early,” Holt said, noting that voting in Georgia ends at 7 p.m. ET. “This is a battlefield condition, this could give an indication of where things are going.”

North Carolina closes a half hour later and “could be a crucial state once again. So in our reporting we will look for those early clues and try to figure out which way the wind is pointing.”

The road to 270 electoral votes could well be a long one: “I packed a hotel for two nights,” Holt revealed.
