Latest updates after polls close in Georgia; The first states called for a presidential race

Polls are about to close in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island, Tennessee, Washington, DC, the eastern time zone part of Michigan Closure and the central time zone portions of Kansas, Florida, North Dakota, South Dakota and Texas.

Pennsylvania is arguably the ultimate swing state prize this year. It is the largest pool of Electoral College votes among the seven swing states targeted by both Trump and Harris. Look for Harris to get most of her votes in Philadelphia and its suburban counties, with smaller votes in counties like Allegheny (Pittsburgh), Dauphin (Harrisburg) and Center (State College). Trump is likely to win most of the smaller counties. Note: Pennsylvania does not begin counting mail-in ballots until Election Day, meaning it could take days for all votes to be counted. Trump has repeatedly and falsely claimed that the state's mail-in voting system is fraudulent, which could lead many of his supporters to skip voting by mail and lead to a more Republican result on Election Day that fades somewhat over time.

Michigan is another important swing state. Note that some Upper Peninsula counties are on the Central Time Zone and polls there won't close for another hour. Harris will seek to make big margins in Detroit's Wayne County and neighboring suburban Oakland County. It also targets Kent County (Grand Rapids), Kalamazoo County and student-rich Washtenaw County (home to the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University, among others). Macomb County, the state with the third-largest population, was among those that Trump flipped from Democrat to Republican when he won the state in 2016. Trump hopes to do well there again this year, as well as in more rural counties across the state.

Maine is expected to vote Democratic, but the state also grants each of its congressional districts one Electoral College vote. The more rural Second District is Trump-friendly territory; He won the district in the last two elections. If Harris can hold on, it could be a sign she's having a good night.

New Hampshire and Florida were once flagship states, but trends have since moved in opposite directions. If Trump is surprisingly competitive in New Hampshire or Harris does unexpectedly well in Florida, that could be a sign that one of them is having a good night.

There are important Senate elections to watch this year in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Florida.
