Last Chance: How to Get Free Air Conditioner from LADWP

Top line:

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is giving away free portable air conditioners to qualifying low-income customers age 60 and older.

The background: This is the fourth – and final – A/C giveaway event LADWP has hosted since July. Previous events have taken place in Watts, Pacoima and Lincoln Heights. The utility has distributed more than 1,000 portable air conditioners to low-income, older Angelenos at these events, but demand remains high.

Why it matters: This is the first summer LADWP has hosted such giveaway events. Officials say that's a possibility the utility wants to address increasingly extreme heat waves caused by climate change.
