Kylian Mbappe has “nothing to blame” in the Swedish rape investigation, lawyer claims

Kylian Mbappé's lawyer says the Real Madrid striker believes he has “nothing to blame” after reports emerged on Thursday linking him to an alleged rape in Sweden.

The claims first emerged after a report by Swedish media outlet Aftonbladet said Stockholm police were investigating an alleged rape in the city and that officers as part of the case had visited the hotel where Mbappe and some of his friends were staying last week.

Swedish prosecutors confirmed on Tuesday that a report had been received of a rape at a hotel in central Stockholm and that a preliminary investigation was being carried out by senior prosecutor Marina Chirakova.

Mbappe was not available for France during this international break due to health reasons and traveled to Sweden with friends and family in his free time.

According to the Aftonbladet report, police visited the hotel on Monday and Mbappe and his friends left Sweden on Friday. It said the police investigation began on Saturday.

That report appeared on Monday and soon after, stories repeating the claims appeared in other media outlets, including in Mbappe's native France. It prompted the striker to write “FAKE NEWS!!!” in a post on X that links to one of several published articles.

Speaking to French television channel TF1, Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, Mbappe's lawyer, said she did not even know whether Mbappe was the subject of the rape complaint.

However, she insisted her client was taking a “calm” approach to his situation.

She said: “He is never alone. He is never in danger of being put in a situation where he would take a risk. For this reason, the fact that he could have committed reprehensible acts is completely ruled out. That is an absolute certainty.

“He is particularly calm, but he is completely astonished to see such a media storm. He doesn’t understand at all what people can accuse him of, up close or from afar.”

Asked whether Mbappe would submit to Swedish justice if the complaint was filed against him, Canu-Bernard said: “If that were the case, of course. But he showed absolute composure again today and also went to training because there is absolutely nothing to blame him for.”

In his message to

This appeared to refer to an appeal hearing due to take place the next day (Tuesday) in the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) – the governing body that runs France's top two football leagues.

The appeal followed an earlier ruling by the LFP in a dispute between Mbappe and his former club Paris Saint-Germain. The LFP ruled that PSG was obliged to pay Mbappé €55 million as the striker claims he owes him retained wages and bonuses from his time at the club (2018-2024).

A PSG source – who wished to remain anonymous to protect their relationship – reacted angrily to Mbappe's post when contacted by The athleteHe described it as “incredibly serious” and “disgraceful”.

A statement from Mbappe's entourage said: “Kylian Mbappe will under no circumstances tolerate his integrity, reputation and honor being damaged by unfounded allegations.”

“In order to put an end to this systematic destruction of his image, all necessary legal actions will be taken to find out the truth and prosecute any person or media outlet involved in the moral harassment and defamatory treatment that Kylian Mbappe repeatedly suffers.”
