Kirby Smart making contact near the sideline with Mississippi State QB

Georgia football coach Kirby Smart went viral on social media for his hand on Mississippi State's quarterback during No. 4 UGA's 41-31 win on Saturday.

It came after a 6-yard run by Michael Van Buren Jr. near the Georgia sideline in the fourth quarter with 2:55 to play.

Van Buren turned and walked back onto the field as Smart took off his visor and shoved the rookie, who remained on his feet. It appeared Smart was trying to clear a linesman, but he said he was trying to reach defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann.

“I think I was targeting Schumann,” Smart said. “I tried to get Schumann’s attention. We tried to change staff. I think it's the way they played when they came to our sideline and tried to get Schumman's attention. But no, I don’t really remember it.”

Van Buren passed for 306 yards and 3 touchdowns on 20 of 37 passes with one interception and rushed for 15 yards on 5 carries.

After the game, Van Buren said of the incident with Smart: “I'm not really sure what it was, but I was just trying to play my game. I didn’t really see it.”

Mississippi State trailed 34-10 in the third quarter before rallying to 34-24 and losing.
