Kari Lake won't apologize for focusing on Rep. Ruben Gallego's divorce

U.S. Senate candidate Kari Lake said Friday she will not apologize for shining a spotlight on Democratic rival Ruben Gallego's 2016 divorce.

Gallego, a five-term member of Congress, and his ex-wife, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, called on Lake to back down on something she had repeatedly raised as an issue, particularly in recent weeks.

In a joint statement Thursday, the former couple demanded an apology from Lake “for lying about our family and the circumstances of our divorce.” They claimed their divorce was finalized to protect their son, who was born shortly after Ruben Gallego filed for divorce in December 2016.

When asked if she would apologize, Lake remained defiant.

“I'm not sure why I should apologize. I didn't let anyone down. I didn’t leave my spouse in a vulnerable state,” Lake said. “Actually, I think he should probably apologize for his behavior.”

Kate Gallego supported her ex-husband in the race.

Lake has stepped up his personal attacks on Ruben Gallego in recent weeks. He responded by calling her a liar unfit for office.

This is because Lake consistently lags behind Gallego in public polls and fundraising. It's also because former President Donald Trump generally had a narrow but consistent lead over Vice President Kamala Harris in polls in Arizona.

Lake, who has baselessly claimed that the 2020 presidential election and her own 2022 gubernatorial election were rife with fraud, was uncertain about accepting the results of the upcoming Nov. 5 election.

“Of course, if this race is run, the campaign is run lawfully and in accordance with the law, there is nothing more than I want to accept that,” she told reporters on Friday. “Absolutely, and I hope that it is a legitimate election where there will be no problems. I think everyone is worried. I know you in the media don’t do that.”

When Lake was asked about the standard for a legitimate election, he dodged the issue and instead attacked the media.

“You really focus on that a lot and then you write a story that I can't stop talking about,” she said. She called the Arizona Republic “one of the least respected outlets in the history of journalism.”

Lake held a news conference Friday to focus on her eight-part “Mama Bear” initiative, a list of congressional policy priorities.

These include promoting school choice, increasing funding for police departments and “advocating for European food safety protections and transparency in labeling.”
