Just a month after its launch, customer complaints about mold in MrBeast's imitation Lunchables are already piling up

Just a month after its launch, MrBeast's Lunchables alternative, Lunchly, is turning some people's stomachs instead of grumbling. Lunchly customers claim the to-go lunch boxes contain mold, and even a popular YouTuber is joining the chorus of angry shoppers.

Rosanna Pansino, a well-known YouTube influencer and cookbook author with 14.5 million subscribers to the app, posted a video on Sunday in which she opened a box of Lunchly containing ingredients for pizza, including slices of dough, a bag of tomato sauce and grated cheese. Pansino claimed that blue mold spores grew on it.

Pansino said she filmed the video, originally intended to compare Lunchly's ingredients to Lunchables', in mid-October and that Lunchly meals have a December expiration date. She criticized Lunchly for potentially endangering fans who had purchased the product.

“I, for one, am tired of the attitude of many top YouTubers to make money at any cost,” Pansino wrote in a comment under her video. “I will continue to speak out on these issues because people are starting to hurt themselves physically AND mentally and now dangerous food is being sold to fans. Enough is enough.”

Pansino's complaints with Lunchly come from a number of Gen Z and Gen Alpha consumers who have expressed similar reactions to alleged mold growth on Lunchly pizza cheese. Some TikToks that purportedly showed mold in Lunchly packages were viewed over 8.8 million times.

Lunchly, which also comes in turkey, cheese and cracker packs and nachos, is a product of MrBeast's, aka Jimmy Donaldson, and YouTubers and entrepreneurs Logan Paul and Olajide “KSI” Olatunji. Lunch meals also include a bottle of Prime, a hydration drink created by Paul and Olatunji, and a bar of chocolate from Feastables, a MrBeast brand.

The product is the latest project from YouTube megastars who collectively have over 350 million subscribers. According to MrBeast, he earned $54 million from YouTube in 2023 Forbesand Paul collected $20.9 million, making him one of the top 10 highest earners on YouTube. While snack and drink lines have become a way to appeal to young generations' obsession with internet hype and social status, they don't necessarily equate to sustained success. Prime had sales of $250 million in its first year, but is now available on discount grocery store shelves.

A spokesperson representing Lunchly, Paul and Prime said Assets All Lunchly products undergo rigorous testing. “This process consists of multiple inspections and approvals, including those from the USDA, before a product can even leave the manufacturing facility,” the spokesperson said.

Legal problems

Even before her Lunchly complaint, Pansino had problems with several of MrBeast's projects. Last year she claimed MrBeast cut her out of one Creator Games video series in 2021. She came forward earlier this year and claimed that she had spoken to over 200 participants on MrBeast Beast games The competition show was originally scheduled to premiere on Amazon. Some of the alleged participants were fed 400 calories every 12 hours during filming and were only allowed three to four hours of sleep, with participants sleeping in sleeping bags on the stadium floor. Pansino didn't answer AssetsPlease comment.

Other participants said they did not receive proper medical care and saw participants suffering injuries and vomiting on set, according to one New York Times August investigation. Last month, MrBeast was named in a lawsuit alleging competitors on the show were subjected to unfair treatment and sexual harassment.

A spokesman for MrBeast said Assets in a statement that filming was “unfortunately complicated by the CrowdStrike incident, extreme weather conditions and other unexpected logistical and communications issues.”

“We communicated directly with 97% of the 2,000 people in attendance to solicit feedback and took the necessary steps to ensure we have learned from this experience and continue to comply with industry standard rules and regulations,” the spokesperson said.

Donaldson's business partners Paul and KSI are also familiar with controversies surrounding their products. Prime was sued by its bottler Refresco for allegedly failing to meet minimum order requirements and abruptly cutting ties with the bottler after sales of the drinks stalled. Prime also faced lawsuits alleging its packaging persistently contained chemicals and mislabeling the amount of caffeine in its energy drink. The Forever Chemicals lawsuit was dismissed.

“It's just an example of people trying to get attention and make a quick buck with a frivolous lawsuit that actually has no merit or is based on nothing,” Paul said in one of his episodes Impulsive Podcast earlier this month.
