Jose Mourinho mocks referee after red card against Man United

Jose Mourinho mocked the referee's “incredible” statement after he was shown a red card in his Fenerbahce side's 1-1 Europa League draw with his former club Manchester United on Thursday.

Just before the hour, Mourinho was shown a red card after a heated argument with the referee that appeared to involve colorful language after Fenerbahce were refused a penalty appeal.

After initially saying he didn't want to talk about the non-penalty, he mocked the referee's account of the incident.

“He told us something incredible,” Mourinho told TNT Sports. “He said that he could see what was happening in the penalty area and my behavior on the sideline at the same time.”

“I congratulate him because his peripheral vision is absolutely incredible. During the game, 100 miles an hour, he had an eye on the penalty situation, and he had an eye on the bench and my behavior. So that's the explanation he gave me.” That's why he's one of the best referees in the world.

Man United took an early lead through Christian Eriksen's goal in the 15th minute, but Youssef En-Nesyri equalized in the 49th minute when he headed unchallenged from close range from Allan Saint-Maximin's cross.

The result keeps Fenerbahce unbeaten with five points from three games, but Mourinho said he believed his team should have gotten more from the game.

“It’s fair to say we played an exceptional game and were better than them, so a good result for Man United,” he said.

“My boys played a great game,” he added. “We played against a team that was superior to us. We ended the game with a centre-back at right-back and a right-back at left-back. We had to solve a crazy puzzle, but our performance was exceptional and I couldn't ask for anything more from the players.”

During his two and a half years at Old Trafford, Mourinho led United to win the Europa League in 2017. He took over the job at Fenerbahce last offseason.
