John Mara's worst nightmare became a brutal Giants reality

Welcome to John Mara's Worst Nightmare.

His $40 million quarterback can't function at home and wasn't happy about being replaced by Drew Lock in the fourth quarter as Brian Daboll looked for a meaningless spark that never came.

The franchise running back, who he didn't want to part with but his general manager did instead to build up the trenches, was the best player on the field, much to the chagrin of disgruntled Giants fans who were happy to see his old one 26 jersey in the stadium parking lot before burning the Giants to the ground.

The Giants' 28-3 loss to his hated Eagles leaves their season ruined.

Really hard knocks for John Mara.

Remember when he talked about sleepless nights when Saquon Barkley fled New York and ended up in Philadelphia?

Maybe he would have gone to bed Sunday night wishing he was Rip Van Winkle. Maybe in 20 years I'll dream of waking up at a retirement press conference for Arch Manning Once A Giant Only A Giant.

Barkley (176 yards rushing, 1 TD, 2-11 receiving) was a one-man force, reaching 21.92 mph on an explosive 55-yard run in the second quarter, the second fastest of the quarter Season in the NFL, and once the Giants' defenders trailed behind them a la Mark Bavaro against the 49ers, cheered on by enthusiastic Eagles fans.

He laughed when asked by excited Giants fans if he witnessed the jersey burning on the team bus.

“That was crazy. “I've seen my jersey being burned before on social media,” Barkley said, “but the time it happened, it's like I'm locked in, I'm listening to my music and I just see the fans with me The fingers are pointing at me.” I look and ask myself: “Where are they pointing?” I see smoke and my jersey is burned. Yes, that was definitely different. I don't know if I've ever experienced anything like this in my life, and I hope I don't experience it again.

“But at that moment I was ready for the 3rd and 1st try, let’s put it that way.”

He would have been ready for the fourth and forever.

“I probably talked a little more trash today than usual,” Barkley said.

Giants fans booed him every time he touched the ball too early.

“I didn't help myself when I said earlier this week that I didn't think I'd be booed,” Barkley said, “but they boo for a reason.” Ultimately, it's a compliment. That’s how I recorded it.”

He fought through for his 3-yard touchdown.

“I didn’t allow myself to let the moment of me get into the end zone, whether it was at MetLife or not,” Barkley said.

He would have broken his career high of 189 yards, set five years ago, if Nick Sirianni hadn't dropped him in the fourth quarter. Barkley didn't care.

“Let the others eat,” he said to Sirianni.

He totaled 187 yards while Jones' offense totaled 181 yards.

“I feel like I’ve been a part of this team for a long time,” Barkley said.

He would give a shout out to Eagles GM Howie Roseman, who inked that three-year, $37.75 million deal after Giants GM Joe Schoen let him swim in the free-agent waters.

“Howie took a risk on me, the whole organization took a risk,” Barkley said, “and I’m grateful for that. Things like that mean a lot to me.

“That’s why there is no hatred in my heart toward the Giants organization. They drafted me, took me, helped a kid achieve his dream, and the same goes for the Eagles. … I was able to find a home in a place I love and I'm happy to be here.

“It’s not about proving someone right or wrong. I just go out there and be myself.”

Schoen knew he might have to eat crow and will until the 2-5 Giants no longer seem like a franchise stuck in quicksand. Or until Barkley slows down with age. In the meantime, Schoen will have to contend with having to pay Jones, who was fired seven times for a weapons offense, and not wanting to pay Barkley.

Jones (14 of 21, 99 yards, 20 yards rushing) will keep his job for the time being. He was frustrated and reluctant about the bench press.

“I obviously didn’t like it,” Jones said.

I didn't like Barkley enforcing his will that afternoon.

“It's hard to see Saquon do that,” Jones said, “He's obviously a good player. We know that very well.”

Jalen Hurts praised Barkley for staying true to himself all week and all Sunday.

“To be honest, I’m so glad the game is over,” Barkley said. “I don’t think I should get any more questions about the Giants other than today. … I still have nothing but love and respect for the guys over there. But I'm happy to be an Eagle.” The owner of the New York Football Giants is not.
