Jets place Kaapo Kähkönen on waivers

The Jets added a goalie Kaapo Kähkönen on waivers, according to PuckPedia. It seems he lost the backup battle Eric Comrie and can be claimed by any team after signing a one-year, $1 million contract with Winnipeg in the offseason.

It's probably not the outcome the Jets or Kähkönen expected after agreeing to the deal. Most assumed Comrie, who struggled with an .874 SV% in 10 games with the Sabers last year, would be the one to be claimed off waivers after a two-year tenure and land at No. 3 on Winnipeg's goaltending depth chart, 825,000 US dollar AAV deal to kick off his fourth term with the Jets.

The Jets could wait to make their decision as a starter Connor HellebuyckThe short absence for personal reasons forced them to have three goalkeepers in their opening lineup. But Hellebuyck returned last night to pitch a shutout in the season opener against the Oilers, with Comrie on the bench, meaning Kähkönen was watching from the press box.

It's worth noting that cutting Kähkönen in place of Comrie frees up an additional $175,000 in cap space. But it's hard to imagine he would clear waivers. His $1 million cap hit is completely buried in the minors unless he works with a new club and ends up back on the waiver bench, and he's an interesting addition after earning an SV last year despite spending 37 games -Percentage of .898 earned with the league-worst Sharks for most of the season. The 28-year-old's numbers weren't too far below average, and he finished the season with a record .923 SV% in six games for the Devils after New Jersey acquired him via trade.

Kähkönen was selected in the fourth round by Minnesota in 2014. He has a career .899 SV%, four shutouts and a 49-67-15 record in 139 appearances with the Wild, Sharks and Devils.
