Jesse Lee Soffer discusses the fourth season premiere of FBI: International.

Former Chicago PD Star Jesse Lee Soffer is embarking on a new chapter in his career, playing the role of Supervisory Special Agent Wesley “Wes” Mitchell in CBS' fourth season. FBI: Internationalwhich premieres on October 15th. Watch the clip above for an exclusive first look at the action-packed events that ultimately lead Wes on a trip abroad.

In “A Leader, Not A Tourist,” Wes finds himself embroiled in an epic chase with a mysterious group wreaking havoc in Los Angeles. But when his partner is shot and the suspects flee to Budapest, Wes is on their trail with a little help from the Fly Team. Oh, and for anyone wondering, Soffer does “most” of his own stunts. “Yeah, my knees hurt,” he joked in a recent interview with Deadline.

The new appearance heralded a big reunion between the fast and furious driver and Chicago PD Co-creator Matt Olmstead, writer and executive producer FBI: International.

“There's so much action, the first episode is great,” he teased. “When Matt and I first talked about it, we discussed who this character would be. I love Matt's writing style, which was one of the biggest incentives for me to do this. He delivered; That first episode was so much fun and it felt like a pilot.”

He continued: “When you meet Wes, he's in this complicated relationship and is obviously married to his work. You'll see his girlfriend throwing his shit away because she thinks he's cheating, but that's not the case. He's just a hard worker, but they get into this fight, and that's how the episode begins. When he then sets off with his partner, with whom he is good friends, they are involved in a shootout as they pursue the gang of robbers. But when his partner gets shot, Wes becomes a man on fire and chases these guys to Budapest. There he reconnects with Cameron Vo (Vinessa Vidotto), who he has this whole backstory with… The episode is packed with lots of characters, backstory and lots of action. It's a great starting point for this new season of FBI: International and this new energy.”

The “new energy” comes after the exit of Luke Kleintank, who led the series as Scott Forrester for the show's first three seasons. Forrester made his final appearance in Episode 11 on May 7, and his character was written off in the Season 3 finale because he was on the run with his mother to Alaska. In the final moments of the finale, the Fly Team fully welcomes Tank (Green) and is adopted by Raines (Carter Redwood). Does this mean he could return to meet Wes?

“Wes meets Tank and Tank says goodbye to Wes,” Soffer confirms. “Everything is cool, so I hope this gives me some respect with the fans. Trust me, I know Tank is the star of the show. We had a really cozy, cozy scene in the second episode, so hopefully that will be a treat for the fans.”

In addition to the beloved black giant schnauzer, Soffer is also accompanied in the show by his friend Ward 19 star Jay Hayden, who will portray Agent Tyler Booth in episodes airing later in the season, as we reported in September.

“You have no idea how exciting it is. It’s so cool,” he said of working with Hayden. “Jay has been one of my best friends for over 15 years. We studied acting together, we taught together. We coached each other on auditions. We were both on TV at the same time, but I was in Chicago and he was in Los Angeles, so we hung out during breaks. It's a dream come true that we get to work on the same show together. I hope the fans like our dynamic.”

Soffer further teased that Wes and Tyler “have a really cool backstory” and have “been through a lot together.”

He continued: “Wes marches to the beat of his own drum and doesn’t always get things right. He doesn't follow procedures and is more like, “Yeah, we'll figure it out and see if there's a solution somewhere.” Jay's character Tyler is even worse. He says, 'We're going to do the wrong thing to make it…' To Wes, Tyler is his bad angel and Smitty (Eva-Jane Willis) is the good angel because he's somewhere in the middle.”

With Wes and Soffer Chicago PD Since both of Jay Halstead's characters were law enforcement professionals in the Dick Wolf universe, it was inevitable that both would be present in Soffer's mind as he filmed.

“(Playing Wes) was easy and hard at the same time. It's difficult because they're both cops, so their situations, their approaches and their lines of dialogue and (to use technical terms) like issuing a BOLO or describing someone, all those cop thoughts are the same,” Soffer said. “The simple thing is that Halsted had so much baggage at the end P.D and had been tested and was such a brooding, dark character. But Wes is like a breath of fresh air; He is much lighter, more carefree and somehow unaffected. I’ve joked a few times that they hold the gun the same way.”

See Soffer with a new love interest FBI: International surprised me a little for a long time Chicago PD Viewer who half-expected Haley (Tracy Spiridakos) to show up – no disrespect to the actress who plays his lover on the show. Hey, it's an Upstead thing and Haley left P.D for a job at the FBI. Although Soffer is no longer playing against Halstead, it could be a fresh start for Haley and Wes.

“Hypothetically, she exists in this universe,” Soffer said of Haley. “And if she ever showed up in Budapest, Wes would ask, 'Do I know you?'”

He added, “Hey, you never know.”
