Jaguars-Patriots: 5 observations

The Jacksonville Jaguars needed this.

No one is going to plan a Super Bowl parade after a win over the now 1-6 New England Patriots, but they couldn't miss the Jaguars' 32-16 win in London.

So what did we see from the Jaguars' second win of the year and what does it mean for the future? We break it down with our five observations below.

Tank Bigsby has staked his claim to the backfield

There was already a strong argument that Tank Bigsby was starting to eat Travis Etienne's carrier. Bigsby has been on a roll over the last month, rushing for 333 yards, four touchdowns and averaging 6.2 yards per carry in his last four games.

That includes two 100-yard games and one game that came within 10 yards of the century mark. Bigsby was absolutely dominant as a sophomore.

The question going forward now is how much of Travis Etienne's carries Bigsby should eat up. Etienne will still play a passing role over Bigsby when he returns from his hamstring injury, but it is currently difficult to substitute Etienne over Bigsby as the focal point of the rushing attack.

Trevor Lawrence is on a roll

There's no doubt that the first month of the season hasn't been kind to Trevor Lawrence. The former No. 1 pick and new big-money franchise quarterback endured one of the worst four games of his career, with Weeks 2 through 4 being particularly off.

Lawrence just didn't look himself during this difficult stretch, as he missed the throws he normally makes from the field, showed poor posture in the pocket and had some inaccuracies.

However, over the last three weeks, Lawrence has played strong football. That continued Sunday, with Lawrence just a foot away from posting a 200-yard, two-touchdown day. The Jaguars didn't need to use Lawrence to keep the Patriots at bay in the second half, but his recent resurgence continued into Week 7 and is now officially a trend.

The defense has made adjustments but needs more answers

Thanks to the return of Tyson Campbell, the Jaguars defense looked a little different this week. With Campbell occupying an outside spot, the Jaguars also moved Darnell Savage to safety and moved Antonio Johnson and Jarrian Jones to the spot.

Savage had played well in the slot, but the Jaguars needed a big safety boost.

While the Jaguars played well in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, they had a rookie quarterback in Drake Maye lead three easy scoring drives in the 1st and 4th. Maye was flawless on the first touchdown, while penalties and missed interceptions also plagued the Jaguars. Jacksonville's defense went up against probably the worst offense they will face this year, but they still had plenty of issues.

Doug Pederson's job is safe for today

Doug Pederson and his coaching staff can breathe a little easier on their flight back to the USA, even if they are far from out of the woods.

There have been rumors all week about what owner Shad Khan would do if the Jaguars lost to New England in London, and when the cameras turned on Khan when the game was 10-0, it was clear he was with was not satisfied with his team's performance.

After that point, however, the Jaguars turned things around, scoring 25 unanswered points and responding to adversity for the first time most of the season.

Pederson and the Jaguars must somehow pull out wins in a brutal second-half schedule to keep their jobs for 2025, but Khan ensured the Jaguars went 2-6 and made the playoffs in 2022. It's unlikely to happen again, but at least Pederson and Co. bought themselves some time.

Brian Thomas Jr. continues his season at the OROY level

If the 2024 season ends today, there's a good chance Brian Thomas Jr. will be on the ballot and become the first Jaguars player to ever win the Rookie of the Year award.

He would have obvious competition from LSU teammates Jayden Daniels and Malik Nabers, but No. 23 is on a ridiculous pace after another big game.

Thomas caught five passes for 89 yards and a touchdown against New England, including a huge 58-yard catch over star cornerback Christian Gonzalez and a two-point conversion catch over the same rising defender. Thomas has now scored four touchdowns this year and is on pace for 1,245 receiving yards. He's a real star.
