LOS ANGELES – Jack Flaherty will start for the Los Angeles Dodgers in their World Series opener against the New York Yankees.

The right-hander will face Gerrit Cole in a hometown matchup at Dodger Stadium on Friday night.

Flaherty is from nearby Burbank and attended high school at Harvard-Westlake in Los Angeles. Cole is from Tustin, Orange County, attended high school at Orange Lutheran and was a pitcher at UCLA.

“Obviously Jack was really good for us,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said in a video conference with reporters on Tuesday. “The experience, the way of managing a trip, he’s seen it all.”

Right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto – the $325 million rookie – will start Saturday's Game 2, Roberts also announced. And the manager added that there would be a bullpen game at some point during the best-of-seven series.

Flaherty made three starts in these playoffs with a 7.04 ERA. He struggled in his last start against the New York Mets in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series, giving up eight earned runs and four walks in three innings.

Flaherty had dominated in Game 1 against the Mets, giving up just two hits in seven innings.

He was traded from the Detroit Tigers to the Dodgers at the July trade deadline.
