It's time for Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany to drop the hammer

FC Bayern Munich's five-game winning streak against Barcelona is over as they suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat in the Champions League on Wednesday evening. Bayern had not conceded four goals in regular time in a Champions League game since their demoralizing 4-0 semi-final defeat to Real Madrid in 2014.

After winning the first seven games of the season, Bayern only won once in the last five games. The opponent's talent level has increased significantly and Bayern have failed to respond in kind.

“We lost and it’s a clear defeat,” Vincent Kompany said afterwards (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Now is not the time to do a big analysis right away. We sit together, analyze the game and then move on. In the first half, in the first 30 minutes, apart from their early goal, I felt like we could win the game. But then the game changed with the second and third goals. We analyze, learn from it and improve. This defeat is not decisive for the season. We will look at the dip in form between the first and second half and work to improve it.”

BFW analysis

Hopefully Kompany is just protecting his players from the media and has devious plans to relentlessly slow them down until the ship gets back on track.

When everyone was healthy and everything was running smoothly, Kompany's calm approach had an impact. However, the team is not playing with the focus, determination and skill required to win games against quality opponents. Bayern looks like a second division team that is simply happy to be invited to the party.

The coach's job is to get the best out of his players, and Bayern are currently glaringly lacking in that.
