“It didn’t matter,” Todd Bowles said of the Bucs’ rejection of the 2-point conversion

For the second time this season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers fell in a heartbreaking overtime. While the first time it went into overtime thanks to a field goal by the Atlanta Falcons, the Buccaneers scored the game-winning touchdown and sent the Kansas City Chiefs into overtime at Arrowhead Stadium.

With just over two minutes remaining and trailing 24-17, quarterback Baker Mayfield led a 10-play, 71-yard drive that culminated in a 1-yard pass touchdown to Ryan Miller. The Buccaneers offense ran off the field without hesitation and Chase McLaughlin hit the extra point. The Chiefs won the coin toss and six minutes later Kareem Hunt found the end zone for the game-winning touchdown.

Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles explained the decision to kick the extra point, even though a two-point conversion likely would have won the game.

“We wanted to make it to overtime. Due to the wet conditions on the field we felt we needed to do one overtime instead of two. So we had our chance. You know, we lost the game,” Bowles said.

The decision drew criticism from analysts and astute reporters. It didn't occur to Bowles that the game came down to a single decision.

“No, we decided on one (point),” Bowles said. “We made our shots, we had our chances throughout the game. We just lost the game, it didn’t matter.”

While the Bucs fall below .500 for the first time this season, the Chiefs hold on to their unbeaten record for another week.
