Iolani and Kamehameha advance to the state volleyball championship

HONOLULU — Throw away the previous six. The only thing that matters is the lucky seventh meeting of Interscholastic League of Honolulu rivals Iolani and Kamehameha on Saturday night.

The Raiders and Warriors secured berths in the championship game of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Division I girls volleyball tournament with wins over the Oahu Interscholastic Association's top two teams, Kapolei and Moanalua, on Friday night at Hemmeter Fieldhouse in Punahou.

Kamehameha coach Chris Blake praised Iolani's coaching staff and dynamic setter Bailey Nakanelua. The defending state champion Warriors (11-6) are the only Hawaii team to win a game against the Raiders (14-1) this season, but they also lost to them five times, surrendering the ILH title.

Iolani and Kamehameha have combined to win the last eight HHSAA DI titles.

“When you see someone and are familiar with them, sometimes that's a good thing. Sometimes it’s not,” Blake told Spectrum News. “But if we play them tomorrow it will be interesting because all the games before that don’t count. It depends on how we want to play the last game of the season.”

Like last year, the Divisions I and II title games will take place at BYU-Hawaii's Cannon Activities Center on Oahu's North Shore. It's an all-ILH affair as Hawaii Baptist Academy and Le Jardin meet for the D-II title at 5 p.m., followed by Iolani and Kamehameha. Kamehameha defeated Punahou there last fall in a thrilling four-set match.

The Cannon's wood floor has been updated compared to last month, when the NBA's Golden State Warriors held training camp there.

Iolani, the HHSAA's top seed, is seeking its fifth state title and second in three years under coach Kainoa Obrey. The Raiders (14-1) defeated OIA runner-up Kapolei 25-17, 25-20, 25-9 as junior Nakanelua delivered a balanced offense with 34 assists and 14 digs.

Nakanelua had center fielder Georgie Lee (11 kills, .556 hitting) coming in strong, and hitter Poema Kalama-Kingma also had 11 kills. Taimane Ainu'u had 10 kills and 10 digs.

Senior Leila Paraoan led Kapolei (13-3) with nine kills on 37 swings.

“Bailey is a great player,” Blake said. “She can distribute the ball very well. She has many weapons. The tools she has are obviously the best in the state. To be competitive, we don't have to do anything spectacular, we just have to do it very consistently. And I think that’s part of our expectation going into this game.”

Kamehameha appeared to be in for a tougher fight against previously unbeaten Moanalua (14-1), which faced a tough test in the first set but held at love to produce a score of 25-23, 25-18, 25-19.

The Warriors are aiming for a record of 25Th Girls volleyball state titles, including a 13th-place finishTh under Blake. No other school has more than nine.

Kala Chock had 12 kills and Kamana'o Goldstein had 10 against Moanalua. Middle Kealoha Lyons delivered eight kills against just one error (.467) and managed five blocks.

Na Menehune got 14 kills from Zaria Queen, but no more than four from any other player.

“We kept them out of the system a lot, which was a testament to our service pressure and the things we did,” said Blake, who rated Alan Cabanting's squad favorably among the teams the Warriors faced this year, regardless of league have seen.

The last times a non-ILH team won a girls volleyball state championship was Kahuku in 2002 in Division I and Konawaena in 2014 in Division II.
