Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti visits the ESPN College GameDay set

Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti went straight from The Walk to ESPN College GameDay on the South Lawn in front of Memorial Stadium to meet briefly with Rece Davis and Co. before Saturday's game against Washington.

He began by telling a personal story about former IU coach Lee Corso.

“My dad overcame cancer when I was a senior in high school,” Cignetti said. “Lee sent a holy cross, which the letter described as having special healing powers, and which lay on his dresser from surgery until his recovery. He beat cancer and lived another 43 years.”

Sitting next to Cignetti on the set, Corso wanted to know how the former JMU coach performed in the fourth quarter of last week's blowout win over Nebraska. The question gave Cignetti the opportunity to tease his former mentor Nick Saban, who joined GameDay as a co-host this season.

“You never want to let up, you always want to train for the next game,” Saban said.

“When I got my ass busted in the fourth quarter, I could never understand it,” Cignetti said, referencing his time with Saban. “Now I understand it.”

Cignetti was part of Saban's first coaching staff at Alabama.

He was the Crimson Tide's wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator when they won a national title in 2009. Saban said Cignetti displayed the same confident demeanor he became known for in Bloomington.

“It rubs off on everyone,” Saban said. “The culture in this place has completely changed because of this attitude.”

The performance ended with Cignetti leading the students in attendance with a brief “Go IU!” chant before heading back to the locker room.”

“Okay, I have to go to work,” he laughed.
