In the Middle East: Escalation Now – Kevin D. Williamson

In any case: escalate.

To try to follow the war between Israel, Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran through the American press is to read through a dark glass – and the US press is better at this than its British and European counterparts. We should try to wipe some dust off the glass so we can see more clearly. One thing we should recognize is the “escalation” that everyone is worried about Exactly what Washington should work towards. Iran has long been on the verge of being able to use a nuclear weapon, and it would be better to confront Tehran before the ayatollahs go nuclear.

But first: There are three distorting lenses that distort our view of the current Israeli campaign: 1. the belief, adopted as a kind of gospel, that securing a ceasefire should come first; 2. the related, also self-evident and evangelical, conviction that the humanitarian situation in Gaza should be a priority concern of both Israeli and American policymakers; 3. The misguided notion, widespread in this litigious United States of America, that the issues before us are primarily, or even in some important respect, legal and subject to appeal.

Let's first and briefly dispense with number 3: What is currently happening to Israel is not a wave of crime, but a war. Even considering how legal the Israeli military is (and listen to David French on this; he knows more about this than most people, having done similar work for the US military), the legal role in this matter actually of secondary importance. But we are talking as if Israel is making arrests and prosecutions on its path to peace, or that the United States is doing so on Israel's behalf.
