Hundreds of Democrats cast ballots to show unity in the Villages

Hundreds of Democrats gathered at the Eisenhower Recreation Center Monday morning and then proceeded on a golf cart to cast their votes for the Democratic ticket.

They were urged to do so by Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, who told the crowd she would fight to protect Social Security and voting rights. She accused incumbent U.S. Sen. Rick Scott of doing nothing for the people of Florida and reminded them that Scott voted against funding the Federal Emergency Management Agency. She continued that everyone should remember that Floridians are all part of one community and should all work together to build a better future.

Mucarsel-Powell led the golf cart parade to the Sumter County Supervisor of Elections office at Pinellas Plaza in The Villages. The long line of golf carts stretched from the parking lot of the Eisenhower Recreation Center to the Sumter County Government Building.

As the cars pulled into the county building parking lot, they were directed to the back of the building, where elections director Bill Keen and several of his staffers collected ballots.

The enthusiasm of the crowd watching the process and those in the carts was electric.

A parade participant dressed as Donald Trump and wore an orange jumper. He was heard shouting “Lock me up” as he took part in the mile-long golf cart parade.
