    One of the most famous New Yorkers in the world is now in the most famous arena in the world in New York.

    Former president and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is hosting a rally at Madison Square Garden at 5 p.m. The Garden is home to the New York Knicks and Rangers with a variety of shows and concerts in between.

    It can accommodate more than 20,000 people at boxing events and typically hosts more than 19,000 people at NHL and NBA games.

    How many people are attending the Trump MSG rally?

    Trump is at Madison Square Garden today to motivate Republican voters. The event starts at 5:00 p.m., but doors open at 12:00 p.m.

    Tickets for Trump rallies are typically allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, with no assigned seating. Therefore, the number of tickets issued does not always correspond to the number of visitors.

    A study by the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation estimates that an average of about 5,600 people gathered at Trump's rally this year.

    While a venue called Madison Square Garden has been around for nearly a century, the current arena has been open since 1968.

    There hasn't been a political event at Madison Square Garden for a long time. New York City and the surrounding area were a Democratic stronghold in the recent presidential election.

    But New York City threw its hat in the ring to host this year's Democratic National Convention. The DNC was in MSG in 1924, 1976, 1980 and 1992. The arena hosted the 2004 Republican National Convention.

    Former Presidents John F. Kennedy, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Richard Nixon hosted events at MSG. The FDR and Nixon events were campaign events.

    There have been other global figures in the garden in recent decades, some with better legacies than others. Pope Francis held mass in MSG in 2015 to a sold-out crowd. Pope John Paul II also held a youth rally at the arena in 1979.

    In February 1939, the arena hosted a rally by the German-American League, a U.S.-based, Nazi-supporting group that gained popularity during World War II. The arena was packed for this event.
