Election Day 2024 is Tuesday, November 5th. Voting is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m

US citizens with a valid ID are eligible to vote.

Can I register to vote in New York on Election Day?

New York is not one of the states where you can register to vote on Election Day.

What's on the ballot?

This year, voters will decide on party candidates for:

  • 16th Congressional District
  • 17th Congressional District
  • Westchester County District Attorney
  • US Senate
  • State Senate
  • State Assembly
  • Local judges

Can I drop off my mail-in ballot in New York?

All New York voters can choose to vote by mail. You can request an absentee ballot through a portal on the State Board of Elections website, but you must do so no later than 10 days before the election (Oct. 26 of this year). The ballot papers will be sent to you by mail.

Completed ballots must be returned to the voter's county elections office before or on the day of the November 5 general election. They will be counted provided they are postmarked by November 5th at the latest.

Instead of mailing it, voters can also drop off their ballot in person at a polling place in their county – either during the nine-day early voting period or on Election Day – or at their county elections office.

Anyone who would like to receive a mail-in ballot after October 26th must go to the county election office in person and request a ballot there. You can then cast your vote immediately.

Is it too late to vote by post?

October 26th is the last day you can mail absentee ballot applications, and October 26th is the last day you can submit an absentee ballot request in person to your board of elections. Mail-in ballots must be mailed and postmarked by October 26th. You can enter until November 12th.

What are the requirements for voting?

Voting registration can be found at the NYS Board of Elections website, at your county board of elections, or at your local Department of Motor Vehicles. To vote you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • be at least 18 years old
  • Live in the state, county, city or village for at least 30 days before the election
  • not be in prison for a crime
