It's official.

Rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall will be active when the San Francisco 49ers take on the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Pearsall managed to attend every 49ers practice this week. He responded so well that the 49ers had no problem activating him

His return to practice gave the 49ers a boost this week. They were excited about his return after his unfortunate shooting incident over a month ago. Pearsall essentially added fuel to the fire for the 49ers ahead of the Chiefs.

“He's doing a really good job, obviously being back and just bringing the juice, getting in and out of his cuts really quickly and providing really good separation,” Brock Purdy said. “And so obviously we drafted him in the first round and he has a lot of potential. And yeah, for him to come in and actually be a part of our offense, not just a young man trying to learn his way, but actually, I'm trying to make an impact pretty early on, I love it.”

Jauan Jennings will not be active against the Chiefs. This means Pearsall could see a healthy workload on his debut. If that happens, Pearsall can help the 49ers improve their offense. The reason they selected him in the first place was his skill as a route runner.

The 49ers wanted another receiver who could separate at will and not rely on a plan. When the 49ers played the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, they faced man-to-man coverage. They were unable to achieve efficiency as their receivers struggled to break free from coverage. Pearsall can do that.

His addition should help Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle in those situations. Either he lets them make a bigger impact, or he takes advantage of those opportunities himself. Another area where Pearsall can help the offense is in the red zone. Many fades or quick shots were called by the 49ers there without success. With a separator like Pearsall that should change.

“It’s another great option and another part of our offense,” Purdy said. “So I think tomorrow we'll obviously go over our red zone plan and stuff like that, but to answer your question, when you have a guy like Ricky who can win man-to-man games and then open some as well can.” Other people too, that’s always a good thing. I’m excited to see what he does.”

As exciting as it will be to see Pearsall's debut, expectations can't be high. His workload may not be enough for a full plate. The 49ers won't want to risk injury with him. He also has no idea how fast the game is. This is where missing the preseason will hurt him. It will take some time for him to make his biggest impact, but there's a chance he can predict what's coming against the Chiefs.

Once he settles in, he will be a big help to the 49ers offense.
