What to expect from the 2024 House and Senate elections on November 5th

The Nov. 5 election will decide the presidency and control of both the House and Senate.

There are 435 races that determine control of the House, but it is likely that control of the House will be limited to just a few key races. The House of Representatives is currently controlled by Republicans, and the GOP is hoping to gain additional seats.

One of those is New York's 17th Congressional District, where freshman Mike Lawler is running against former Democratic Rep. Mondaire Jones. The district is among several that President Biden won in 2020 and Democrats hope to turn it blue again.

Another is Virginia's 7th Congressional District, where Democrat Eugene Vindman and Republican Derrick Anderson are running against each other. The seat is being vacated by Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger, who is running for governor.

Another important race is Michigan's 8th Congressional District. The seat is being vacated by Democratic Rep. Dan Kildee. The race pits Democratic Sen. Kristen McDonald Rivet against Republican former Trump administration official Paul Junge.

Other competitive races include Maryland's 6th race, which some see as an opportunity for Republicans, with April Delany as a Democrat and former state President Del. Neil Parrott runs as a Republican.

Overall, Alaska expects a victory for Republicans, whose only seat will be determined through ranked-choice voting.

In the Senate, Republicans are now hoping to regain the majority.

The Democrats currently have the majority with 51 seats in the Senate.

But with the resignation of Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.V., who is considered an independent, West Virginia will likely flip to Republicans on Election Day.

In Ohio, Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown is running a tough race against Republican businessman Bernie Moreno.

In Montana, Democratic Sen. John Tester is in a tough race as he tries to distance himself from Vice President Kamala Harris.

Democrats hold a number of other at-risk seats in key battleground states: Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Arizona and Nevada.

And some of these candidates have run ads in the run-up to the election linking incumbent senators to Trump — without even mentioning Harris.
