Here's what we know about curfews in Richmond, Columbia and Aiken counties

Columbia County recently announced a curfew for Columbia County residents beginning Saturday evening after Tropical Storm Helene devastated the Augusta region.

Columbia County officials are implementing a curfew for all Columbia County residents starting Saturday evening at 8 p.m. and lasting until 8 a.m. Sunday, according to a news release.

“(The) decision is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and well-being of our community during ongoing efforts to work with community partners to remove debris, downed trees and downed power lines from major roadways throughout the county,” the release said.

During the curfew, all residents are required to stay off the streets unless absolutely necessary, the statement said.

The county has not clarified what makes travel “absolutely necessary.”

“This temporary restriction is aimed at minimizing the risks associated with hazardous conditions and enabling emergency responders to effectively manage and respond to all emergency situations,” the release said. “We understand that curfews can be inconvenient, but the safety of our residents is our top priority. We urge everyone to adhere to this curfew to protect our community and first responders and ensure a rapid response to emergencies that may arise.”

Richmond County implemented a curfew on Saturday that will be in effect from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. until further notice, The Chronicle reported. Aiken County also has a curfew from 7:30 p.m. 7:30am. Essential workers for local businesses/services and emergency responders are exempt.
