HECO deactivates public safety shutdown in West Maui

Update, 5:45 p.m

Hawaiian Electric has disabled its public power shutoff monitoring after the National Weather Service lifted a red flag warning for all Hawaiian islands.

Hawaiian Electric monitored weather conditions throughout the day and did not interrupt power to customers during today's PSPS hours. Any power outages today had nothing to do with the PSPS program.

Previous coverage

Hawaiian Electric says it has activated its public safety power shutoff program and is prepared to shut off power in West Maui due to the imminent threat of wildfires caused by high winds and dry conditions.

In an email statement sent just after 11:30 a.m. today, HECO said the program is expected to be activated around noon today. According to an email update from 1:53 p.m., power for West Maui will remain on as of 1:30 p.m

“Customers in these areas are urged to prepare to implement their own emergency plans and prepare for the possibility of extended power outages,” the release said.

HECO said it is monitoring wind and weather conditions and proactively turning off power to communities in West Maui that are at high risk for wildfires.

Hawaiian Electric said it is also working to restore power to a non-PSPS outage in Upcountry Maui that affected about 150 customers.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for leeward areas of all Hawaiian islands today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“We sincerely apologize for the disruption,” Hawaiian Electric senior vice president and chief operations officer Jim Alberts said in the release. “We activated our PSPS program as a last line of defense to protect lives and reduce the risk of a wildfire. We will continue to monitor conditions closely and will restore power as soon as it is safe to do so.”
