BOSTON – From being awarded their 2024 championship rings and hoisting Banner 18 to the rafters in a special pregame ceremony to defeating the new-look New York Knicks by 23 points, the Celtics had a near-perfect start to the season 2024-25.

Why “almost,” you ask?

Well, the NBA record for 3-pointers made in a single game is 29. And the Celtics had already made 29 threes with a full nine minutes left in the fourth quarter.

But with NBA immortality just around the corner, the C's are promptly there missed 13 consecutive 3-point shots In the final eight minutes he shot 29 for 61 from distance and was content with that a share of the record with the 2020-21 Milwaukee Bucks.

Boston's attempt at history became so comical that the restless crowd at TD Garden began chanting “One more, three!” Late in the fourth quarter, as C's players went up brick by brick. Sniper Sam Hauser, who was responsible for four of those 13 missed shots, understood the fans' complaints.

“We did our best, man!” Hauser continued Celtic's aftermath liveas seen in the video player above. “We missed about 15 times in a row, but we made great shots. The ball moved, we found the right player. We just couldn't get it done. So I’m sorry, Boston.”

But Hauser was also careful to acknowledge the absurdity of the audience (somewhat sarcastically) mocking a team that eliminated its conference rival after celebrating a championship.

“Man, we were booed at 30 on ring night. How about this?” Hauser added.

The fourth quarter was a bizarre end to an otherwise brilliant night of Celtics basketball. The C's made 10 3-pointers in the first quarter (the the most goals a team has ever scored in the first quarter of a season opener) and had 17 triples by halftime. While Jayson Tatum was the catalyst – he shot an impressive 8 of 11 from 3-point range en route to a game-high 37 points – the entire team was involved, with all five starters making at least three 3-pointers.

That trigger-happy offensive attack was a key reason the Celtics won Banner 18 and helped them wipe out a supposedly dangerous Knicks team on Tuesday night. It was even stranger that Boston couldn't buy a basket in the fourth quarter.

“It was almost like we were jinxed or something,” Celtics star Jaylen Brown joked after the game. “When we had fun and played our style of basketball, everything went well. And then when the crowd started and we started chasing them, we couldn't even hit the broad side of the barn. As if everything had failed.” .

“We had some great looks and it was like a lid on the basket.”
