Has Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential election campaign?

It seems like some people were surprised to see that President Joe Biden wasn't on the ballot this year.

According to Google Trends, search results for “Did Joe Biden drop out?” peaked this week and are surging on Election Day, even though the president dropped out of the 2024 race this summer and is supporting the current Democratic Party nominee, vice president had Kamala Harris.

On July 21, Biden shared a letter announcing that he would no longer run for president, although he originally “intended to run for re-election in 2024.”

“I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country that I resign and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote.

On the same day that Biden announced he would no longer run for president, he also endorsed Harris for the candidacy.

“Today I want to express my full support and support for Kamala as our party's nominee this year,” he said in another post on X. “Democrats – it's time to come together and beat Trump.”

The announcement came shortly after a late June presidential debate that many found equally uninspiring and troubling, and led to questions about Biden's mental fitness and his ability to defeat Republican nominee Donald Trump. Even many of his supporters, donors and fellow Democrats called on the 81-year-old president to abandon his candidacy after the debate.

“Some of my Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate thought I was hurting them in the races,” Biden said CBS News. “When I first ran, I saw myself as an interim president. I can't even say how old I am; I have a hard time getting it out of my mouth.”

Although it has been months since Biden officially dropped out of the race, there are apparently still Americans who don't know who is running for president.

“Imagine being a voter who just found out today that Joe Biden isn’t running,” Armand Domalewski, data scientist and co-founder of YIMBYs for Harris, wrote on X on Tuesday.
