Baier protested, but Harris pressed on, essentially accusing him of hiding what he knew about Trump. “You and I both know that he has talked about using the American military against the American people,” Harris said. She added:

He has talked about persecuting people who protest peacefully. He's talked about locking people up because they don't agree with him. That is a democracy. And in a democracy, the President of the United States of America should be willing to deal with criticism without saying he would lock people up for it. And that's exactly what it's about.

What Harris revealed here is that Trump is essentially running his campaign on the explicit promise of treating the opposition and its voters as sub-American. He's threatened to persecute the “vermin” opposition, vowed to use federal disaster relief money to blackmail blue states into doing his bidding, initiated sending the military to Democratic-run cities, and has it all in his most recent post more clearly expressed “enemy within” complains.

Trump is essentially running on an open promise to serially violate his oath of office to wage a sort of scorched-earth campaign against blue America. Baier knows that all of this is toxic for swing voters. And so the picture of Trump that he painted was one in which Trump himself is the only victim of the persecution.
