Halloween to see average temperatures

play

According to the National Weather Service, the frighteningly warm temperatures that Phoenix experienced throughout most of October are likely to be chased away by Halloween.

Temperatures in Phoenix are expected to drop nearly 20 degrees through Tuesday, falling from an expected high of 93 degrees on Monday to an expected high in the mid-70s on Tuesday.

The drastic drop in temperatures is due to a cold front moving through the region, said Weather Service meteorologist Isaac Smith. The cold front could also bring more wind and a chance of rain, although major precipitation is not expected in Phoenix.

“Some areas may see a shower or two Monday evening,” Smith said, but measurable rain “will fall northeast of Phoenix in high terrain,” he continued.

By Halloween on Thursday, the weather service predicts temperatures will rise back to the low to mid 80s, about the same as the October 31 average. Halloween night is expected to cool into the high 60s and low 70s, perfect weather for trick-or-treating.

“Overall it was a pretty mild evening, along with dry conditions, it's looking pretty good out there,” Smith said.

The cooler temperatures are expected to last into early November, Smith said.

The cooling forecast for this week will provide major relief after a long spell of record-breaking heat. Phoenix experienced its highest temperature on record this fall of 110 degrees and the first day above 110 degrees in October. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport experienced record-breaking temperatures for 21 days in a row, which Smith said is “pretty unprecedented for something like this to happen anywhere.”

The forecast drop into the mid-70s and upper 80s will put Phoenix on track to match average temperatures for that time rather than break records.
