Halftime Observations: No. 2 Georgia trails Florida 13-6 | Matchday

The No. 2-ranked Georgia Bulldogs currently trail the Florida Gators 13-6 at halftime. Here are some observations from The Red & Black.

Beck fights again

The Bulldogs missed points in this first half. Georgia found its way into Florida territory on the game's first drive, but Carson Beck narrowly missed running back Cash Jones on a third down wheel route that almost certainly would have been a touchdown, and the Bulldogs were forced to rush in instead Plus to punting territory. On its next possession, Georgia went even further by driving to the Florida six-yard line and scoring first, but was unable to score the touchdown and settled for a field goal instead. Georgia outscored Florida 224 to 150 in the first half, but all the yards in the world don't matter if you can't consistently get into the end zone. Beck threw another ugly interception on Georgia's next drive when he crawled left and fired an ill-fated ball into double coverage that was intercepted by Florida's Devin Moore. Florida scored on the very next play, and Beck's turnovers continued on the next drive, where he threw another interception to Florida defensive back Aaron Gates. It was another difficult first half for Georgia's veteran quarterback.

Bulldogs are forced to defend short fields

Georgia's defense looked solid for the most part in this game, except when they were forced to defend a shortened field due to a Bulldogs turnover. Nothing was going well for Florida in the first quarter until DJ Lagway bombed Aidan Mizell on the first play of the game after Beck's first interception in the second quarter. After the next interception, Florida moved to the Georgia 14-yard line before the defense prevented the Gators from a field goal. Overall, the Bulldogs tackled well for the most part and stayed disciplined, but the defense can only do so much when the offense pressures them into action with turnovers. Florida handily won the battle for field position in this game, and Georgia needs to put its defense in a better position to be successful in the second half. KJ Bolden leads the team with five tackles, while Damon Wilson had a game-winning tackle for loss inside the Gators' five-yard line, which resulted in a Florida punt. Georgia endured a tough end to the half, allowing Florida to sneak down the field late in the quarter and score a 53-yard field goal to extend their lead to seven points.

I'm still trying to establish the run

Florida has the second-worst run defense in the SEC, allowing over 160 rushing yards per game, but the Bulldogs haven't taken advantage yet. Former Gator Trevor Etienne, who went to the locker room late in the half, has just seven carries for 31 yards, while freshman Nate Frazier completed seven carries for 22 yards. Georgia has already thrown the ball 25 times, but might want to think about keeping it on the ground a little longer in the second half, as two of those attempts were ugly interceptions by Beck. The Bulldogs aren't far enough behind that they need to do it all the way give up the run. You're playing a team that has been prone to this all season, and when your quarterback is currently struggling like Beck is, the best thing to do is to get the running game going to relieve some pressure. If Georgia wants to regain control of the game in the second half, it will need to establish some threat to a running game.
