Guardians All-Star combines franchise history in ALDS Game 5

Game 5 of the ALDS began with a bit of franchise history for the Cleveland Guardians.

Steven Kwan entered the box early in the first inning with Detroit Tigers star Tarik Skubal on the mound. Skubal pitched a perfect game in the fifth inning the last time he faced the Guardians, but Kwan started the game with a basehit.

This single extended Kwan's postseason hitting streak to 10 games, tying him with Kenny Lofton (1995) as the longest playoff hitting streak in Cleveland franchise history. He tied with Tony Fernandez (1997) for the second-longest time in Game 4.

The single that helped Kwan make franchise history was almost not even considered a hit. When Kwan touched the ball, it skipped past Skubal on the mound and engulfed Andy Ibanez at second base. It was originally an error by Ibanez, but it was quickly converted back into a base hit.

This is not the first time in this series that a Guardians batsman has benefited from a score change. Jose Ramirez hit an RBI double in Game 1, but it was also originally ruled an error by Zach McKinstry. It took the MLB over 24 hours and an appeal from the Guardians to legitimately turn the game into a hit.

Should the Guardians defeat the Tigers in Game 5, Kwan would have a chance to extend his hitting streak in the ALCS. Otherwise, he'll have to wait until next fall and another hopeful pot season appearance in Cleveland to make history.
