Green Bay Packers are wary of Arizona Cardinals forward Kyler Murray

ARIZONA – The Arizona Cardinals are under .500 with a 2-3 record at Lambeau Field, although the Green Bay Packers aren't looking past their Week 6 opponents.

The Cardinals haven't excelled in all areas since Jonathan Gannon took over a roster now in the second year of its rebuild, although Arizona has shown they can hang with the best of the best.

The Cardinals finished last season with one of the best rushing attacks in the league. After five games in 2024, Arizona still leads the NFL in categories like yards per game (156.4) and yards per carry (5.5).

The verdict is still out on exactly how the Cardinals will maintain those numbers, as the starters at right guard (Will Hernandez) and right tackle (Jonah Williams) are now both on injured reserve, although Green Bay will see what numbers are like Running back James Conner and quarterback Kyler Murray can do it.

“He’s a beast,” Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said of Conner via Packers on SI. “He’s a big, physical defender who is more elusive than you would expect from a bigger guy.”

Conner has 379 rushing yards (4.6 YPC) with three touchdowns so far, and his running style is reminiscent of vintage football that people over 30 can remember.

Murray's rushing style as a quarterback is very different, yet just as effective thanks to his speed and agility.

“Whether it's a zone attack that he brings to the house for 50 yards (like he did against San Francisco) or simply containing him in the passing game, you have to defend long when he has the ball in his.” Hands because he can throw within the timing of the game or land off schedule,” LaFleur said.

“You have to be smart going against a quarterback of this caliber because he can make you look really silly very quickly – and if you give him big rush lanes, he's going to take advantage of that. “Like I said, he can do you hit with his legs, he can hit you with his arm. I think he has a lot of talented players around him.

“I think they’re doing a really good job, so it’s going to be a big test for our football team.”

Murray is averaging more than 10 yards per carry and has made four “explosive” plays on the ground of 20 yards or more.

With a “thunder and lightning” combination out of the backfield, defenses will have to be honest with the Cardinals – which could play into the hands of a player like Conner who gets better as a game goes on.

“He’s a workhorse and I think he gets stronger the more he carries. I don’t think guys really want to tackle him – he’s a big guy,” Murray said on Conner this week.

“(A) big, physically quick guy who doesn't really shy away from contact, and he's very mobile and can catch the ball. There's nothing I don't think James can do. When you get a guy like him going, it's definitely beneficial to the offense.”

The Cardinals certainly know what's coming out of the backfield, but so do the Packers.
