Greece pays tribute to George Baldock for his famous victory over England at Wembley Stadium

It was an emotional evening for Greece at Wembley Stadium on Thursday as the country's soccer team paid tribute to teammate George Baldock, who was recently found dead in the swimming pool at his home in Athens.

Greece celebrated the first victory over England in national team history as Vangelis Pavlidis secured a famous last-minute 2-1 win.

Pavlidis gave Greece the lead early in the second half and it looked like the team would hold on until the end against a toothless English side.

But Jude Bellingham seemed to have saved England's blushes and saved at least a draw with a goal just three minutes from time, but in the 94th minute Pavlidis popped up and fired home the winner.

Before the game, the Greek players were photographed wearing Baldock's No. 2 jersey, which they also raised in the air after Pavlidis' first goal.

At full time, the players once again held up his jersey in front of the Greek fans who had traveled with them, shouting: “Baldock, Baldock.”

Pavlidis also dedicated his opening goal to the former Sheffield United and Panathinaikos player, holding up his black armband.

“Georgey, this is for you!” defender Lazaros Rota shouted into the camera at the end of the game.

Baldock qualified to represent Greece through his paternal grandmother and played twelve times for the national team throughout his career.

“It was a very special game for us because of George and of course we gave everything for him and his family,” Pavlidis told ITV after the game. “Great win, but more important are the emotions and the fact that we are human beings and that our special evening is thanks to him.”

Pavlidis said Baldock was on the players' minds “a lot” in the 24 hours before the game.

“Since yesterday when we heard about it, it was a really difficult moment for us because George was part of the team and he was a special guy,” he said. “We had a lot of time with everyone and we just said we have to play for him.

“The score doesn’t matter today, we want to play for him and we’ll give everything for him.”

Baldock began his career at MK Dons and went on to play for Oxford United and Northampton Town, among others, before playing for Sheffield United in the Premier League.

He signed a three-year contract with Greek club Panathinaikos earlier this year.

Baldock's family listed the defender's cause of death as drowning, telling the Associated Press: “We can confirm that an autopsy has revealed that George tragically drowned while swimming in the pool at his home in Glyfada, Athens.”
