Goalies help Blackhawks leave Southern California with two wins

The San Jose Sharks are the worst of the three California teams these days, so it didn't feel good for the Chicago Blackhawks to lose to them. They knew it would take a big rebound to beat the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks.

The Kings hosted Chicago on Saturday night and the Hawks pulled through with a gutsy comeback. That paved the way for them to get a second win in Southern California while the Ducks were ready to host.

Anaheim outscored Chicago 8-1, but Arvid Soderblom remained strong in the Hawk net. Chicago then scored first at 12:57, despite being outplayed up to that point. Isaak Phillips scored his first goal of the season after Connor Bedard set him up with a shot.

Teuvo Teravainen scored a power play goal a few minutes later to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead. Taylor Hall made a nice pass to find Teravainen, who didn't miss. Alex Vlasic received an assist as he looks good as a power play quarterback.

In the second period, Seth Jones scored the only goal of the quarter to make the score 3-0. Connor Bedard put it in a tee shot for Jones to unleash his shot. Lukas Reichel, who has been outstanding recently, was also able to secure an assist on the move.

Anaheim's Brock McGinn took Chicago's lead midway through the third period. However, the Hawks ultimately secured the win when Ryan Donato scored at the back of the net thanks to some hard-working play from him and Bedard. Mason McTavish scored with two seconds left, making the final score 4-2.

The story of this game, similar to the previous game, was how the goalies kept Chicago in the game until they got back on their feet. After Petr Mrazek made 37 saves on 40 shots the night before, Arvid Soderblom made 37 saves on 39 shots.

Before the weekend even began, Chicago announced that Petr Mrazek would be starting against the Kings, and he was great. Arvid Soderblom was named the starter for this Anaheim game, which marked his first start in seven games, although he played well in limited action.

Soderblom responded magnificently to the bell with all of these saves. He kept the Hawks ahead early, he kept them ahead late, and he deserves credit for that. There is no longer any reason for him to miss six games in a row. He may still be the replacement for Mrazek, but he deserves a chance to continue to prove himself.

Without their goalie, the Hawks wouldn't leave Southern California with two wins. They played a little better overall against Anaheim, but Soderblom was the star.

The Blackhawks have a few days off now, but these two goaltenders will be needed this week. They have another back-to-back situation as they host the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday before traveling to the Dallas Stars on Thursday. If they get to that level of goaltending again, they will have a chance.
