Georgia Football vs. Florida: Scouting Report, Prediction

play

In the age of the transfer portal and jumping into the NFL after junior seasons, recruiting classes are often reduced when a player is a senior.

Georgia football players who stayed have a chance Saturday to do something that doesn't happen too often: beat Florida four years in a row.

Defensive lineman Nazir Stackhouse, linebacker Chaz Chambliss, offensive lineman Xavier Truss and receiver Arian Smith can check that box when the No. 2 Bulldogs beat Florida on Saturday in Jacksonville.

All have played a victorious role in the last three years. This also applies to Smael Mondon, who is expected to be out with a foot injury. Safety Dan Jackson also missed games due to injury.

Georgia's senior class of 1983 was the last to win four straight against Florida.

“It's just an accomplishment in itself to go 4-0 against an SEC team,” Chambliss said.

For many Bulldogs and their fans, beating Florida is different.

“It would mean everything to never lose a game,” Smith said. “Just being able to leave here and talk about it.”

Why Georgia will beat Florida

Florida quarterback DJ Lagway's two starts this year came in The Swamp. This will take place at EverBank Stadium with a 50:50 spectator split.

According to cfbstats.com, the freshman is 16 of 24 for 174 yards with one touchdown and one interception on the road with a yards per attempt rate of 7.3

“We have to make him uncomfortable, we have to get in his pocket and do a good job of giving him disguises he's never seen before,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said on Fox5 Atlanta .

Georgia managed a season-high seven sacks for 59 yards in its win over No. 1 Texas two weeks ago.

Placing Jalon Walker along a defensive front that also includes the healthier Mykel Williams puts Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning in trouble. Walker had three sacks and Williams had two. Texas A&M, Tennessee and Kentucky each sacked Lagway twice.

Georgia ran the ball better with Trevor Etienne back under center with Jared Wilson and right guard Tate Ratledge able to return from a sprained ankle on Saturday. The Bulldogs could attack a secondary that will be missing veteran cornerback Jason Marshall because of a shoulder injury.

Why Florida will beat Georgia

Will Georgia have a hangover after big win over Texas?

Florida is certainly very motivated to win its first game against Georgia since 2020.

The Gators have won three of their last four games this season but haven't been able to compete with the best teams on their schedule, although they had a chance to win at Tennessee before falling in overtime.

“I feel like Florida has played as well as any team in the SEC over the last few weeks,” Smart said. “They are coping better. They played complementary football, that’s the right word, at a high level.”

Georgia's defense bounced back after giving up explosive plays in the Texas game against Mississippi State, but is dealing with the loss of starters Jackson and Joenel Aguero due to targeted suspensions in the first half.

Lagway has transfer weapons in wide receivers Elijah Badger (Arizona State) and Chimere Dike (Wisconsin).

He completed 62.8 percent of his passes with five touchdowns and five interceptions and threw a game-winning 27-yard touchdown against Tennessee to force overtime before the Gators lost.

“He does a good job of asserting himself,” Smart said. “And he made several plays where he trusted the pocket, moved forward and made really good throws. He obviously threw the ball really well down low last game against Kentucky.”

Carson Beck was injured by dropped passes, but the Bulldogs worked on it.

Smart said on his radio show last week that “we've been trying to really attack” the passes dropped since the Texas game.

“We want traffic-related catches that are at risk of being hit,” he said. “To the extent that we can do that, I think it gives our players confidence. Not just intercepting a machine.”

forecast

Georgia 34, Florida 20

Georgia could rely more on its running game and Etienne could set up the pass for Beck and reduce turnovers. Lagway should make some big plays, but expect the Georgia defense to take advantage of opportunities to pressure him in the pocket. The Gators cover the lead, but Georgia wins its fourth straight against the Gators.
