Georgetown is facing backlash for honoring the former basketball player who assaulted an officer

The Georgetown University women's basketball team is facing criticism online for apparently honoring a former player who was killed after attacking a police officer in Virginia.

Body-worn police camera video released Monday shows the moments a knife-armed Sydney Wilson slashes the Fairfax County Police Department officer before fatally shooting her.

“Georgetown women’s basketball mourns the tragic loss of Sydney Wilson (C’13). Forever a Hoya. #HoyaSaxa,” the post reads.

Georgetown's post was shared on X on September 20, just days after the shooting and several weeks before the footage was released. The post included a photo of Wilson smiling in her Georgetown uniform.

“The pathetic attempt to victimize her when she first attacked him with a knife,” one person wrote.

“Tragic loss? She tried to murder a cop and almost succeeded,” another added.

Others responded by sharing the body camera footage or stills from the video in the comments section of the post. Still images show Wilson clutching the knife and lunging at the officer.

Some asked why the team didn't delete the post. As of 12:00 p.m. EDT, the post was still online.

“You should delete that,” more than one person demanded.

Some defended Wilson. On Facebook, one person said Wilson should not have been killed but rather subdued with a stun gun.

“Sydney Wilson should have been verbally abused instead, but of course she was black so they took her out,” the post said.

In the video, Officer Peter Liu, an officer trained in crisis intervention, approaches Wilson's apartment door in Reston, Virginia, on September 16.

Police said the department received a request from a psychologist to check on Wilson, 33, who was reportedly agitated.

Lui knocks and Wilson opens the door, but she abruptly slams the door shut.

Lui, a 14-year veteran, knocks again and waits for Wilson to come back to the door. When she does, she appears to have a knife in her hand and lunges at him, slashing his face.

Lui backs away and tells her to drop the gun, but she refuses. The 6-foot Wilson continues to attempt to slash him, with the officer firing his weapon several times before Wilson falls to the ground.

“He did the things we teach him and expect him to do,” Chief Kevin Davis said during a news conference Monday afternoon.

A news release said emergency responders treated Wilson at the scene until emergency responders arrived. She was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

“Any loss of life is something we all grieve,” Davis said. “The person whose life was lost in this particular case is no different; “She has a family and friends and loved ones who love her very much, who care about her and are undoubtedly grieving and upset, and we recognize that and we pray and think about it.”

Police said the officer has been placed on restricted duty status pending the outcome of the investigation.
