When Saturday's game against Houston concludes, the 2024 Iowa State football team could become the first Cyclones squad since 2000 to start 4-0.

Matt Campbell's team is in full swing early in the season, taking care of games against North Dakota and Arkansas State at home while knocking out rival Iowa at Kinnick Stadium. As a result, the path to reaching the Big 12 title game and the expanded College Football Playoff begins to come into play for Iowa State.

To do that, they'll need to be a strong starter in the Big 12 against a struggling Houston squad that's 1-3 on the year behind first-year head coach Willie Fritz.

Stay tuned here throughout the evening for live updates and analysis on tonight's game.

The Cougars' backup quarterback, Zeon Chriss, who had been substituted off and on throughout the game so far, appeared to have made a tremendous run, pushing several defenders into at least field goal range for Houston. A block in the back penalty negated that and later led to a punt.

Iowa State takes over with its own 20%.

The Cyclones were backed deep in their own territory and were unable to find a purchase as Becht's pass was incomplete on 3rd-and-8. Houston now takes over at their own 42.

The Cyclone offense has only 83 yards of total offense so far, while Houston is holding its own despite playing just as slow on offense at 90 yards

The Cyclones got another defensive stop and forced a punt at midfield to take control at their own seven-yard line. However, Iowa State's John Klosterman, another Cyclones linebacker, was injured on the drive when he went down the boom on a tackle and had to be helped off the field. Another linebacker for Iowa State out with an injury.

The Cyclones failed at the Houston 45 but were unable to convert on third down as Rocco Becht's pass to the flat to Jaylin Noel was not recovered. Jace Gilbert's punt narrowly crossed the goal line, giving the Cougars the lead at their own 20.

As the Cougars ran the ball, Verdon scored behind the line of scrimmage to end the drive. Iowa State takes over at its own 26 to extend its lead.

The Cy-Hawk hero scored a 23-yard field goal from the far left marker. The Cyclones had some success on the ground while rotating running backs on the drive, but stalled in the redzone and opted to take an early lead.

Stacy Sneed completed a 37-yard strike into ISU territory to begin the push toward Houston. From there, however, the drive stalled as Houston's fourth-and-4 attempts were aborted. While the Cougars could have attempted a field goal from about 45 yards out, they were aggressive and gave the ISU defense some momentum.

The Cyclones won the toss and moved into the second half.

Injuries plague the Cyclone defense, particularly at linebacker, with stars like Caleb Bacon suffering injuries early in the season. Yet Iowa State's defense has only allowed three, seven and 19 points in each of its games so far, a mere 9.67 points per game.

They currently rank No. 8 in the country in scoring defense and are 18th in yards allowed per game. Iowa State columnist Travis Hines believes the defense has bounced back despite injuries.

Hines: As for the defense, I think now is the time to remind people once again how good coordinator Jon Heacock and his staff are. No matter the injuries, no matter the turnovers, no matter the opponent, Iowa State's defense has consistently performed well year after year.

It's truly remarkable. That would be incredible anywhere, but when you have a roster that's mostly middle class, it's especially impressive in Ames.

So Cael Brezina, Jacob Ellis and Kooper Ebel at linebacker and the players elsewhere on defense certainly deserve a lot of credit for their tenacity, but the common denominator over the years has been the personnel.

During warmups, Jalen Travis took the reps on first-team offense in place of the usual James Neal. The Cyclones like to rotate multiple offensive lineman during a game, but it looks like the Princeton transfer will attract first-team reps to start the game if warmups are any indication.

According to Cyclone columnist Travis Hines, Klotz was seen warming up without pads, suggesting he likely won't play. He had two receptions for 34 yards this year, but his main strength is as a blocker on offense.
