Game balls, gameplay

The Green Bay Packers defeated the Houston Texans 24-22 at Lambeau Field in Week 7 of the 2024 season.

It's time to distribute game balls and determine the course of the game:

Play balls

Attack: WR Romeo Doubs – He didn't score a touchdown, but Doubs was the target for Jordan Love. The third-year receiver ran a nice route on the first play of the game with a 23-yard catch. He regularly won on break-in routes against man coverage and made several catches in traffic in the middle of the field. Love targeted him three times on the final drive and caught two of them for 18 yards, including a 12-yarder to put the Packers within field goal range and a 6-yarder to bring McManus to 50 yards. Doubs finished the game with eight catches for 94 yards, all game highs.

Defense: LB Eric Wilson – After Quay Walker went down in the first half, Wilson was given a full-time role and made one big play after another. He twice ended drives with sacks on third downs. On 2nd-and-10, he made a tackle for loss that helped force a field goal attempt. He broke up a pass in coverage on third down. On 2nd-and-8, he made a tackle for loss and eventually forced a punt. He made a tackle and covered a punt. Wilson finished with four tackles for loss and three plays that ended drives on third down. The veteran was a game-changer in an unexpected role on Sunday.

Special Teams: P Daniel Whelan – Brandon McManus made the game winner, but Whelan gets the game ball as he regularly turns the field over with massive punts and saves the day with the final kick. Whelan had three punts for 60 yards and a per-punt average of nearly 58 yards, and his net average, including return yards, was still over 51 yards. In the game-winner, Whelan made an incredible catch and save on a really bad snap. As far as a bettor's influence on the outcome of the game goes, Whelan's performance was as good as it's ever been.

Game play

Playing quarterback in the red zone often requires throws in nearly impossible windows. Watch Jordan Love's surgery on 3rd and 4 in the first half. He first looks left to hold the safety, then he comes back over the seam to Tucker Kraft and fires a fastball to get past the safety. Love said he didn't make a perfect throw and wanted the ball higher up to get around the safety. But he threw the ball so hard that it didn't matter. The safety came a second too late and Kraft made an incredible diving catch. Love's arm talent was the difference between a potential interception or a field goal and a touchdown in the red zone. The score gave the Packers a 7-3 lead in the second quarter and was the first of three successful scoring plays by Love in the back-and-forth contest.
