Former NFL player and award-winning restaurateur shot in attempted robbery in Maryland

A former NFL player who is now an award-winning chef and restaurateur was shot and killed during an attempted robbery in Hyattsville, Maryland, on Tuesday evening.

Hyattsville police reported that two people – a man and a woman – were shot while returning from dinner, but did not release their names or conditions.

Prince George's County Council member Wanika Fisher told WJLA that Tobias Dorzon was one of the victims, that he was recovering from his injuries and that she was distraught to learn that her constituent and friend had been shot.

“I’m just so heartbroken and worried and praying for Tobias’ recovery,” Fisher said. “I was just on my hands and knees praying that Tobias would be okay.” Gun violence and violence in our communities is simply unacceptable and abhorrent.

After playing in the NFL, Dorzon became a chef.

He returned to Prince George's County where he opened Huncho House, which received rave reviews.

However, Fisher said his success is just the tip of the iceberg as to why he has become an important leader in the community.

“He employs students from Northwestern High School in his restaurants. He makes sure there are black and brown chefs and women in his kitchen,” Fisher said. “He lives in my district, he owns a business in my district, he is a friend, he supports my community. I’m just sad, but I’m angry.”

Just six months ago, Fisher and her fellow council members honored Dorzon.

At the time, he had just been named Chef of the Year by the Restaurant Association of Maryland, making him the first from Prince George's County to win the honor.

At the council meeting he spoke about how important it was for him to return home.

“Leave Houston and come home to give the people of our county the opportunity to come back and work,” Dorzon said during the May ceremony. “I am here to stay. I’m here to continue to improve the county.”

Hyattsville police said they are looking for five victims as well as a white SUV with a sunroof.

“I am doing everything I can to help our Hyattsville Police Department bring these perpetrators to justice and support Tobias and his family during this time,” Fisher said.

WJLA asked Fisher if an incident like this, involving such a prominent person, would prompt the county to take another crack at gun violence.

“The reality for Prince George's County is that there are gun laws in Annapolis. The district level is the police authority. We don't have the authority to ban certain things like DC does. This is Annapolis. I think it's really imperative that we continue to do this.” “We're committed to this, as the council has been,” Fisher said. “They need to remove illegal weapons from the streets. We are a border district. Illegal guns come into my community from DC, Virginia, and other places. Illegal weapons, untraceable weapons, are a huge national problem. It's not a local problem.” I think it's about investment, as you've seen, more cameras, everything we can do locally, more police recruitment. In this budget cycle, we need to do everything we can , but it takes multiple levels of government to get these weapons off the streets.
